One Sunday afternoon, two married couples shared the table next to the grill still full of steaming meat, while the children were running around laughing in the beautiful park of the weekend house. The talk passed pleasantly going from one subject to another between desserts, glasses of wine and coffee ...
-Yes, it is true that the world has made positive progress in many aspects -Adolfo, the homeowner, affirmed- but they will not deny me that they used to live better!
- I totally agree! - Arturo, his childhood friend agreed - do you remember when we were kids ?, no alarms or security 24 hours, in summer we could leave the house door open all afternoon to run air!
Full of longing and honoring the classic "all past time was better, " they commented how several decades ago people were supportive and helped those who needed it as a natural reaction, remembering that no one was left with what was not their own without becoming this in the media hero of the day or the fact that there were no children hungry in the streets.
That same night when he returned to his apartment in the city center, Arturo stopped with his family in a restaurant to buy food to go. When leaving the premises, muttering funny because they had been wrong charging them less, the couple's little daughter detached herself from her mother's hand to caress a dirty, skinny and sad-looking puppy that approached by shaking the tail. With abrupt movement the father raised the six-year-old girl, driving away the animal with threats; he confused and looking for another caress he stood up supporting his front legs on the man's legs, which earned him a strong kick.
Once in the vehicle he rebuked the girl for her carelessness.
-Do not touch the animals of Sofia Street, that mangy dog could have bitten you, who knows what diseases he has!
-It's not a daddy dog, it's a bitch, Lady said in the medal, she must be lost. Can we help her? - asked the little girl.
The father still worried about what could have happened refused, arguing reasons of safety, hygiene and health, concluding that for that surely there were protective entities of animals that would take care of the tramp.
When he stopped at the next traffic light, when a boy dressed in rags approached the car, the man and his wife immediately closed the windows ignoring him while commenting disgustedly at the insecurity with which he was traveling and how they could steal their watches in an oversight.
"I think that baby didn't want to steal mommy, " Sofia suggested from the backseat. "He said he wanted coins to buy a sandwich ..."
The mother explained to her daughter the risk of allowing that child to approach, since they did not know their true intentions and how some adults take advantage by sending them to ask to later take their money; adding that although he felt sorry for him, that way the boy would learn that in life things are obtained by working.
Being a few blocks away from their building, they were trapped in a traffic jam caused by a driver trying to push their broken car without help while guiding the steering wheel sideways with the door open towards the sidewalk; Arturo, like the other motorists, stayed comfortably installed in his seat, blowing the horn, urging him to hurry, urged to get home before his dinner cooled.
A couple of months later, the family traveled on winter vacations to the city of San Martín de los Andes, in the south of the country. The afternoon they returned from an excursion to Mount Lanin, the car they had rented had a tire damaged. While Arturo was about to change the wheel with difficulty because of the ice that covered the edges of the narrow road, reasoning indignantly for not having help in such a situation, the girl began to run around the area moving away before her parents could notice .
When Sofia wanted to return, disoriented she began to walk in the opposite direction towards the forest; When he realized that she was lost, she broke down crying for help and stumbled with the root of a tree rolling down a steep slope. Frightened, cold and one of her knees hurt by the fall, she yelled in shock when an animal appeared to her from some bushes. The panic gave way to relief when a small dog approached, waving its tail amicably, and after licking the wound he lay down next to her, providing him with a coat.
A few hours later, the girl hugged her parents who had been desperate looking for her with the valuable collaboration of the park ranger.
While they enjoyed the hospitality of the guard, savoring a cup of hot chocolate in front of their cabin home, Sofia excitedly recounted the way the brave dog had helped her realizing she needed him.
Arturo smiling condescending to the innocence of his daughter explained that the animal had done what dictated his instinct, which the girl was somewhat disappointed.
The park ranger crouched in front of the baby to talk to him, putting the puppy in his arms:
-However, I believe that his instinct would have made him return to the cabin to take refuge from the cold and enjoy his dinner, what your four-legged rescuer felt for you is called empathy.
-What is empathy? - Asked curious as he hugged his affectionate hero who kept licking his cheeks.
-Empathy is the ability that we all have to identify with the needs of the other, beautiful- answered the park ranger - although science maintains that the only species with reasoning is man, we all in the animal kingdom have the capacity to feel.
