Diet and nutritional guide for diverticula or diverticulosis

  • 2011

The diverticula are deformations of the intestine (or stomach), which are presented in the form of sacs that hang out from the intestinal walls due to the weakening of these walls. These bags or sacs are formed in two stages: the diverticula, which are only "bags" that hang in the colon and are not inflamed, and diverticulosis, which is when these sacs are inflamed.

Diet plays a fundamental role in the treatment of this condition. During diverticulosis, it is necessary to leave the intestine at rest, and once the inflammation disappears, then a diet without residues should be used which consists in selecting certain foods and eliminating others in a radical way.

Food allowed:

Fiber : Among the best foods to treat this condition are those rich in water and fiber, such as fruits and vegetables and whole grains.

Whole grains : the best are: oatmeal, bran, amaranth and brown rice. The oatmeal should be eaten raw, it can be liquefied with some fruit or dissolved in orange juice. Although they are very good to treat and combat this condition, you should not include cereals very often in the day, as they can cause constipation which is not advisable.

Drink two liters of water a day : this should be something you do not forget because a good evacuation depends on the humidity of your food bolus. Water will help you collect toxic waste and grease.

Avoid : tomato seeds, guavas and fruits with small seeds, since these are not recommended for now.

Foods that are easy to digest : those that are soft with the intestines and do not take long to digest.

The best foods for your stomach at this time are : brown rice, miso, tofu, apple, papaya, semi-cooked vegetables (steamed), vegetable soups and broths, vegetable milks, extra virgin olive oil, etc.

Garlic is not usually recommended as an irritant, however, if you take a small piece (half the size of your pinky nail) every third day, it will help you greatly and regenerate intestines and keep your colon very well purified.

Condiments allowed : sea salt (use as little as possible), parsley, rosemary, bay leaf, thyme, oregano, saffron, basil, cumin and sage.

Supplements, juices and foods highly recommended to heal the intestines:

Aloe juice or prickly pear juice with lemon, are tissue regenerators and powerful scrubbers of the intestines.

Apple juice: it is ideal at night, or also eat an apple or two at night, without peel at the moment. Pear apple with pear is an elixir for diseased intestines.

Agar agar jelly is great for the intestines.

• Take flax seeds (flaxseed ) in the morning accompanied by papaya or fruit.

Food not allowed:

• All processed and refined products such as white sugar, refined flours, cookies, cakes, white bread (very harmful to the intestines) sweets, sodas (soft drinks are bad), box or processed cereals (such as those sold in supermarkets), etc.

• Avoid fried foods, red meat and sausages, these products only clog the intestines and cause fermentations that create a myriad of diseases and also irritate and weaken your intestines more.

• No vinegars, mustards, irritants, chiles, spicy, pickles, vinaigrettes, mayonnaise, ketchup, coffee, chocolates and canned.

• No dietary sugar, which is not healthy at all. The best thing is honey, very easy to digest and, in addition, it has excellent properties to regenerate tissues, it is depurative, it has a lot of minerals and vitamins, it has antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties.

• Cow's milk and derivatives (cheeses, processed yogurts, etc.) you should eliminate them without thinking about your diet. These products are very difficult to digest, stick to the intestinal lining and only weaken and make your intestines more sick.

• Eat the egg in moderation, two or three per week, and well cooked.

How should one eat?

It is best to make more light meals a day, small portions, instead of eating a lot in a single meal, so that the waste does not accumulate and the evacuation is faster and more fluid.

RECOMMENDED DIET:

Eat by splitting the food into small portions, including vegetables, seedless fruits and whole grains every day.

Chew each bite slowly, do not eat in a hurry and thoroughly salivate food.

The foods that you should prefer are those of easy digestion (see detail in foods).

Avoid very hot or very cold foods, get warm foods and drinks.

Do not mix fruits with any food . Fruits should be eaten alone, with an empty stomach, two hours after eating and waiting 20 minutes after eating them to eat something else. If you combine fruit with food foals, it will cause stomach fermentation that is not healthy and will only irritate your intestines.

The only cheeses that are allowed (and only twice a week, if you really want to cure yourself) are the fresh ones.

Try not to eat chicken right now, choose fish two or three times a week, and try a diet based on vegetables and cereals at the moment.

At meals you can make purees of vegetables and soups, always accompanied by a juice or salad of fresh vegetables.

Recommended infusions:

All those anti-inflammatory and digestive such as: chamomile, peppermint, peppermint, mallow and boldo.
