Second Toltec Agreement: 'Do not take anything personally'

  • 2018

Don't take your madness personal. You are the excuse that your unconscious uses to give way to your unacceptable suffering.

Leandro Taub

At present, with the advance of telecommunications and technology, the way we interact is in crisis. Therefore, it is imperative that we worry about creating strong and true bonds in our lives.

Welcome to this second installment of the analysis cycle of the Four Toltec Agreements . In the previous article we talked about the First Agreement and the value of words. This time we will see the importance of the Second Toltec Agreement : Do not take anything personally .

The law of the Mirror

You cannot talk about this agreement without referring to the previous one. We already know the power of creation that language has, and that depending on how we use it, we can do good or evil. However, we cannot control the way others use it.

And the truth is that, in the same way as with us, when someone speaks they are referring to their own person, or as Miguel Ruiz says, their own agreements . In this way he reveals his own beliefs, values and principles, as well as his own prejudices, insecurities and conflicts. They have little to do with you.

And yet it affects you .

This happens because we have the agreement to give value to what others say, and that leads us to react. If you are a person conflicted with your weight, having someone tell you fat will trigger a reaction from you. If you are a person who has conflicts because you do not feel productive or intelligent, someone who throws it in your face will touch an intimate fiber in your being . How then do we not take this personally?

Know yourself

Well, the answer is simple. If you know how you are, and you accept yourself that way, then what others tell you will not affect you. To comply with this agreement you must learn to love yourself, beginning perhaps with being impeccable with the words with which you speak. Then, what others tell you will not affect you because you already know the truth about yourself.

People will talk about you because that is what people who are not thinking about their personal growth do. If one day they are wrong, they will speak to you badly, if they are well they will treat you well. Your responsibility is that your mood does not depend on the treatment of others. Know yourself first. And let everyone solve their own problems.

People as victims

In today's world we live in constant contact with violence, frustration, insecurity, etc. And it is that poison that people breathe from the environment that asks us to leave. They will go out to the street to distribute emotional poison, because they have also received it from other people. Do not be the recipient of the emotional waste of others. Do not let the words of others affect you.

There is a way to avoid absorbing this violence that is breathed, and that is what Miguel Ruiz teaches us: Do not take anything personally. And to achieve this, the first step is to know yourself.

That way you will break that cycle.

Needless to say, nobody finds it easy to live day by day under the agreement of the Toltecs. Not all the time we will be predisposed to carry out all our actions based on this great teaching.

However, if we take these principles and adopt them as the values on which to position ourselves for life, then they will be more important to us than the mere circumstances of our day. And from that moment, there will be only one course of action.

Be impeccable with your words and don't take anything personally.
