Reincarnation in European history 2: Amos Comenio

Rudolf Steiner and the concept of reincarnation

We continue to present themes of the Karmic Relations work, which is a compilation of talks given by Rudolf Steiner in 1924, before his disembodiment that occurred on March 30, 1925.

Rudolf Steiner considered that his mission was to universalize the concept of reincarnation and karma . Not superficially, but to explain how karma manifests in life, after life and in the new incarnation.

The understanding of these concepts will be expressed in more elaborate forms of our ethical development and therefore of our ability to make decisions. We can better understand our experiences and therefore form our character more solidly

On this occasion we will study Rudolf Steiner's approaches to reincarnation and the life of Amos Comenio.

Who was Amos Comenio?

«Talent develops with the exercise of talent; you learn to write, writing; to sing, singing »(He began).

Jan Amos Komenský, Comenio (1592-1670) He was born in Moravia, the current Czech Republic.

From a Protestant family, he became a priest. He went into exile in Poland due to religious persecution. He lived the war of thirty years. His works were published by the Senate of Amsterdam, city where he died.

His main work is Teaching Magna (1632) in which he exposes his teaching method.

Its methodology indicates that all senses should be used

Its proposals have as principles that humanity is perfectible and that education is the means to achieve it.

Its proposals have as principles that humanity is perfectible and that education is the means to achieve it.

One of the basic aspects of its methodology is that all the senses should be used and that all learning should be useful.

Steiner points out that people related to esoteric knowledge can be divided into two groups. Those who think that the knowledge received is unalterable and those who believe that the truths must adapt to the time and therefore work to update knowledge. Comenio belonged to the latter.

He is the founder of the new pedagogy. He was linked to different brotherhoods throughout Europe and wanted to establish what he called his Pansophy. His goal was to prepare mankind for the changes that should occur and help develop all previous knowledge in the form of intellect.

He considered that the schools of wisdom that in ancient times were aimed at the elect, should now be open to all mankind in the form of scientific knowledge that would be transmitted through the school system that should reach all mankind.

Comenio and his reincarnations

In a previous life, Comenius had been chancellor in the flourishing Muslim empire led by Haroum al Raschid between the eighth and ninth centuries . Al Raschid reincarnated in England as Bacon von Veralum (Francis Bacon 1561-1626) and at the same time did Comenius (1592-1670). Bacon proposed the inductive method of science, in addition to being an important politician of the time.

Rudolf Steiner says:

Amos Comenius can be seen by anyone who follows his biography, the way he lived, by the time of that time, as a reformer of the new pedagogy and as the author of that. called Pansof a - brought to here (Europe) what he developed in the court of Harem Al Raschid from an ancient initiation .

Influence of Bacon on Comenio

It is important to note that there was communication between both Bacon and Comenio. Comenio took from Bacon the importance that education should focus on real things and children should learn useful things.

In addition Bacon proposed scientific research and the need for science to be universally recognized. He began to insist that education be universal and based on scientific knowledge.

The Bacon manifesto The Advancement of Learning (1605) greatly influenced the pedagogy of Comenio, for example with the importance of introducing the methods of induction and experimentation in school teaching.

In Bacon, universalism was a final step after the long process of scientific induction. In Comenio it was immediate. The school should be the same for everyone, now.

It is interesting to note that the reformed German principalities were willing to practice these ideas . While in other places, these ideas were seen as utopias.

Although Bacon was from the English island and Comenius lived on the European continent there was communication not only between them, but also between their followers.

Bacvon - The reincarnation of the most famous Muslim Caliph - and Comenius - the reincarnation of the Muslim Prime Minister - will continue their task of the cultural development of humanity. The ideas of Muslim religious determinism will be transformed into scientific materialism and their contributions will be destined to the knowledge of the physical world and the development of the senses of perception.

Your contributions will be destined to the knowledge of the physical world and the development of the senses of perception.

Is there anything else about reincarnation?

Is there anything else about reincarnation that we have not taken into account?

Steiner's goal is for us to understand how karma and reincarnation works. For this reason he adds that after the death of Bacon and Comenius, they continued working. Leading, from the next life, to his followers who were incarnated or were prepared to reincarnate.

This means that, in the next century, their followers not only followed them for having read their written works, but were actually guided on a spiritual level.

This means that, in the next century, their followers not only followed them for having read their written works, but were actually guided on a spiritual level.

What is meant here is that Bacon and Comenio continued their work between their previous life and their later life. Because this occurs after death and before the next incarnation, Steiner calls it influence of premortal life. This influence is on the followers who are about to incarnate and those who are already incarnated.

To exemplify this situation, it shows the discussion that has taken place on whether Shakespeare wrote his works or wrote them Bacon . Steiner says the answer is that there was an initiate that influenced both. In other words, the relationship between their work is due to the fact that there was a common source. The two were followers of an initiate of greater hierarchy, who was not incarnate

What Steiner is saying is that after death the person delivers accounts and informs his followers that they will embody what the state of the situation is and the steps to follow.

The influence that came from the Arab world was that of religious determinism that in Europe has been expressed as materialism.

After the death of Bacon and Comenio, his followers continued his work in this regard.

Remember that both Bacon and Comenio will reinforce the aspect of experience and of acquiring knowledge of the sensory world, of what we perceive with the senses.

Consequences of the work of the followers of Bacon Y Comenio.

Among these influences that occurred after the death of Bacon and Comenius is that of historians.

Bacon followers

Later historians will no longer discuss ideas, but real events. This means that history is no longer going to take intentions into account, because they are not real facts. This led the flow of making history only from what is read in the archives, what the diplomats write. This was one of the positions of the followers of Bacon.

Comenio followers

Another form of written history was that made by the disciples of Comenius. It is the position of the moralist, he wants to speak directly to the hearts.

Rudolf Steiner (2000) notes:

Understanding karma does not mean being able to speak in a more or less understandable way about successive earthly incarnations, no: understanding karma means feeling in the heart what it can feel if in the human soul it is seen coming towards later times what was found in earlier times . (p. 50)
