In this practice, we also become aware of the consequences of our behavior. The emotional wounds we cause to others can be so powerful that their effects do not last only one life but several generations. In the Amazon, they are called generational curses: the terror that a tormented mother can cause her daughters is felt by the daughters of her daughters' daughters, and the harsh punishment that a father inflicts on her son is felt for generations. This also operates at the collective level. For example, the legacy of colonialism and slavery did not disappear when the last slaves died - their experiences affected the way they raised their children and how they raised their own children. The same also happens in families where there is alcoholism, mental illness or abuse. Even the grandchildren of people who lost everything during the great depression have to deal with problems of scarcity.
Generational curses often go unnoticed, as we are born with them and consider them part of our skin. It is important to become aware of these legacies so that we can heal them, and avoid condemning our children to a life in which they will be reacting to a wound that was inflicted on our grandmother seventy-five years ago. Living with consistency means healing this wound rather than leaving it as an inheritance to our children. When you believe that someone close to you is trapped in a story that is not yours, you can offer wisdom, advice and support. But please, keep in mind that if you become superior and play the role of the noble savior, you will be assigning that person the poor victim, and begin to impose your own dogmas on him.
There is nothing more frustrating than listening to someone who tells you with enough air. Leave your story at once and move on to something else.
