The Flag of Peace, a symbol of union in diversity

The International Committee of the Flag of Peace, a dependent entity of the United Nations Organization, is a non-profit association dedicated to disseminating and publicizing the message of the Flag of Peace and its founder, the illustrious artist Nicolas K. Roerich.

The Flag of Peace "is a universal symbol that represents unity in diversity to achieve a better world, sponsoring respect for all beliefs, " according to the president of the committee, Alicia Rodríguez. Its image is made up of three spheres of magenta color, forming a triangle with the vertex facing up, surrounded by a circle of the same color on a white background.

This symbol was chosen by Roerich because it had been used by different civilizations and at different stages of history, but always with a positive message and associated with the defense of the highest values of social groups. He appeared for the first time in some cave paintings found in Mongolia over 9, 000 years ago. For Tibetans it represents "The solvent of darkness", because where there is light there cannot be darkness. In India it is known as "Chintamani" or symbol of Happiness. The Mayan culture, meanwhile, gives the meaning of "Hincan - Inkaten - Uchagen", that is. "I want, I can and I do it." He is also very respected for the Buddhist religion, as it is the representation of the father, mother and son. In fact, the Dalai Lama is an honorary member of the committee. On the other hand, the image symbolizes the Trinity for Catholics and has a prominent presence in Christian art.

The Peace Flag was unanimously accepted by all the countries of the American continent on April 15, 1935 at an event held at the American White House, where the Roerich Peace Pact was signed. In 1937 the Roerich Pact was ratified by all the countries that made up the League of Nations, a precursor to the United Nations.

"In these decisive moments for our planet, the Roerich Pact speaks of all consciences, installing them to live in unity in diversity to achieve, in harmony, a world better united by peace, " he explains. Rodriguez. One of the main missions of the president of the committee is to deliver peace flags to governments, administrations and public and private entities that work in favor of these objectives in any field. Another important initiative is the “Together we build peace” campaign, which is aimed especially at schools. Its purpose is that children themselves become promoters of peace and mediate in the conflicts that may arise, both at school and between their friends and their family, always carrying this message of unity in diversity.
