Doctors and nurses from October 12 give Reiki classes. Ram ny Cajal uses this technique in patients with cancer. When Dr. Araceli Garc a proposed in the hospital October 12, where she works as a pediatric surgeon, an informative talk about reiki - Japanese therapy that heals with her hands - shuffles for a second the possibility that They will take her crazy. But I thought I was presenting something that loved me had helped me to find myself better and my fear of rejection was taken away, he says.

This therapy consists of channeling the energy towards a point of the body, placing the hands on it. The talk, by the president of the Spanish Reiki Federation, John Curtin, took place in January and was a success. So much so that, since summer, more than one hundred doctors and nurses have been trained in the hospital to give Reiki.

Iki Reiki means universal energy, explains Curtin. It is a method of natural healing that consists in channeling energy to a point on the body, placing your hands on it. Reiki does not heal on its own, but it strengthens our self-healing ability.

Dr. Araceli Garc a already sees how her companions apply Reiki to each other to treat, for example, headaches. And some nurses, with more experience, use it to help hospitalized children sleep, he explains.

At the other end of Madrid, Ramón and Cajal cancer patients have been receiving reiki sessions every Tuesday for three years thanks to the Alaia association, which deals with terminal patients. Just this fall, the hospital has authorized an investigation into the effects of reiki. We have proven that this treatment has a very beneficial effect on patients, so now we want to cover it with a more scientific character and, therefore, we will carry out the project, to try to objectify the favorable effect of this technique, explains the person in charge of patient care, Luis Carlos Martínez Aguado. The nursing section will be responsible for conducting a study that will last six months and that the hospital hopes will serve to convince skeptics and extend reiki to other medical areas.

The introduction of natural therapies in hospitals to improve the health status of patients is an international trend. In Madrid, the Complutense University hosts from today and until Sunday, in the Faculty of Medicine and the San Carlos Clinical Hospital, the IV Conference on the control of emotions with Bach Flowers for health professionals. For a few days, doctors will not talk about aspirins, but about these floral essences that are shown as a safe and highly effective option to deal with emotional disorders such as stress, phobias, insomnia or anxiety.
