Let's save the Pichi drawer (Chile)

  • 2012

Today I want to talk about a magical place, located near Santiago de Chile.

A place that houses endangered animals, unique flora and a charming beekeeping village. This place is called the Caj n del Pichi and is about to be exploited by the mining company Yamana Gold and the company Miguel Zauschkevich Domeyko. Let's help save this natural heritage that belongs to everyone.

One of the ways is to declare the basin, an area of scientific interest for mining purposes, please sign and disseminate.

The Pichi drawer is located 12 kilometers northeast of Villa Alhu (RM), under the Altos de Cantillana massif. It is precisely his accessibility that has kept him in excellent state of preservation. The diversity of species that harbors the basin and sub-basins nearby is really surprising, from species that were believed to be extinct or new findings for the area, from species of flora (Cassia perdoda de Philippi) to Onic foros (living fossils of more than 500 Million years).

In addition there are several species in conservation categories such as Robles, del Norte, Acorns del Norte, Chilean palm, Naranjillos, Lingues. Endemic reptiles of this area (nowhere in the world) as Valeria's grinding lizard (Pristidactylus valeriae) the frassinetti matuate (Liolaemus frassinetti), mammals such as pumas, g i So, quiques hanging around the cordon, it is even estimated that the extinct darwiin frog (Rhinoderma rufum) and the marsupial Monito del Monte could also be done in addition to the archeological level being They were carrying important discoveries, soon to become public.

The area is part of the Critical Area for the Conservation of World Biodiversity (No. 25 of 34 in the world), due to the wide biological diversity it hosts and its high degree of endemism (several species that live here only! ). In addition to being a priority priority site No. 1 and Pichi - and the Panama gorge - one of the basins with the best state of conservation in the central area and provides robust and vital! ecosystem services to the central zone of Chile and finally to the planet.

Its vegetation is so diverse and particular that beekeeping has grown a lot to take advantage of the tremendous and varied botanical origin of its nectar, honey finally. Pichi has been devoted to his extraordinary and very particular honey in the markets, he would be the first almost purely beekeeper town.

Now the El Escarpe mining project, by the mining entrepreneur Miguel Zauschkevich Domeyko and in partnership with Yamana Gold, did not contemplate any Environmental Impact Study or even an Environmental Impact Statement. Unfortunately, it was already intervened with dozens of calicatas in the Zone of Greater Ecological Value, in the middle of a forest of oaks, in a foreign property, without permission and affected species in conservation category such as the northern oak (finally killed). There have been several complaints in this regard it has been difficult for them to come to fruition. This has been in the San Juan de Piche farm, soon to be declared a Nature Sanctuary.

The Municipality of Alhué conducted a Citizen consultation in the area and of the 176 Pichanos who participated in the consultation Held on November 31, 2011 in Barrancas de Pichi, a query that expresses discontent or approval regarding the Mining project in Cajón de Pichi (Cordón de Cantillana) 175 people voted against the project.

Fortunately today, the project is required to be exploitative or exploratory, enter SEIA through an Environmental Impact Study, which is not yet entered since they are in court with the owners to avoid carrying out up to management plans.

The Pichi basin, Altos de Cantillana, sub-basins and more all the Zones of Greater Ecological Value and surrounding areas fully meet the merits to be declared a Zone of Scientific Interest for Mining Effects, the only legal figure that would effectively protect it from this activity .

Thanks for spreading!!
