In 1987, the Tonna family moved by their unwavering faith began to design a work which they had promised to their spiritual guide. This is how on May 25, 1987, its inauguration took place, date on which it corresponded with the 100th birthday of Padre Pio .
This inauguration had great relevance and was very popular both by the residents of Salto, as well as from all parts of Uruguay and Argentina.
How was the inauguration?
The inauguration was full of mainly religious rituals and not so orthodox events . In this way a Mass of the Creole type was carried out with the infallible choir typical of the Christian religion. The plants seem to speak in unison of the universe manifesting themselves as great spectators for the afflicted one who comes at the feet of the Blessed Father to vent his sorrows. In this way, as the windlass passes, each step is blessed by the wonderful company of the holy priest, whose aura permeates each of the recesses of that room. Every so often meters, one encounters phrases and thoughts of Father P o, auspicious, encouraging phrases which magically give answers, or rather, possible exits to those afflictions with which we arrived. Or maybe, answers to those big questions that despite the years that one has of life have not been able to be answered.
Finally, after crossing the enriching and pleasant path constituted by scree and earth, surrounded by green pastures and careful yuyos that frame and shape the road, one meets the mysterious grotto where the beloved Father P o is .
In this cave, thousands of devotees have left their prayers, rosaries, precious relics and candles to show or express their gratitude. With his benevolent hand directed towards his admirers Father P o, from this statue, he blesses each of his believers or simple seekers of the extrasensory.
Where is the Padre Pio Grotto located?
It is geographically located in Uruguay, more specifically in the La Aurora ranch, near the River Daymán, whose boundaries are made up of the departments of Paysandú and Salto .
Biography of Padre Pio
Padre Pio was a Capuccino priest who lived in Italy. In 1930, Padre Pio was fulfilling the functions that his position as secretary of the Bishop demanded from him in the city of Salto. Because of these, the father develops a friendship with the priest, Monsignor Fernando Damiani. The Bishop had given Damiani powers to have contact with other religious communities in Italy in order to bring them to Salto.
That is how Damiani met and frequented Padre Pio in Italy, and with whom he generated a very fraternal friendship. This friendship was so deep and strong that Damiani confessed to Padre Pio that he was "afraid of death and that he wanted to have him by the side at the time his death came." The story tells that Padre Pio told him to "not worry, that he would be by his side when his time came." This is how during the time when the fundamental stone was being laid for the construction of the minor seminary building in Salto, in 1941, Monsignor Damiani began to agonize and dies in one of the rooms of the Bishopric of Salto. That night, when they notified the Archbishop of Montevideo, Monsignor Barbieri, who was also of the order of the Capuccinos (like Pio in Italy) that Damiani was dying, quickly left his room to go to the room where he was a sick priest, and he saw the shadow of a Capuchin priest, that of Father Pio, who was not there.
Moment from which he transcended the story that Padre Pio had the gift of bilocation, in other words that he had the power to be in two different places at the same time, so he was in Salto giving his friend extreme unction Monsignor Damiani while also in Italy.
When asked about this matter, the Bishop of Salto, Monsignor Pablo Galimberti confirmed this narration of the facts and admitted the sayings that were said about the gift of Pius on the bilocation. I also affirm that Pius had such a strong spiritual connection that in 1917 he experienced the stigmata that Christ had suffered in his hands for what he suffered a lot during those times. It was a very difficult time for him, it is alleged.
This was investigated and corroborated by the Vatican, thanks to which Padre Pio, today, is already beatified . Unfortunately in his time he was harassed by his peers, since his condition of spiritual connection aroused the envy of many. Pío founded hospitals and worked hard for the people who needed it.
