The MING GUA number and personal orientations, by Yorgos Kontokolias

Just as Chi affects houses differently according to their seating orientation, it also affects people differently, depending on their Ming Gua number (Personal Trigram) which is calculated from the year of birth. The Ming Gua numbers are those of the Lo Shu Magic Square, which also correspond to the eight trigrams of Bagua.

How is the Ming Gua number calculated in the northern hemisphere?

For the women:

1. Add the numbers of the year of birth. Example: 1955. 1 + 9 + 5 + 5 = 20

2. Continue adding until you reach a single figure. 2 + 0 = 2

3. Add 4 to the number obtained. 2 + 4 = 6

The Ming Gua number of this woman is 6.

For men:

1. Add the numbers of the year of birth. Example: 1955. 1 + 9 + 5 + 5 = 20

2. Continue adding until you reach a single figure. 2 + 0 = 2

3. Subtract the number obtained from 11. 11 - 2 = 9

This man's Ming Gua is 9.

The number 5 has no address, because it is located in the center of Lo Shu. Therefore, if the result is 5, then the following applies:

- For a woman, 5 becomes 8.

- For a man, 5 becomes 2.

Keep in mind that the Chinese solar year begins on February 4 or 5. If a person was born between January 1 and February 3, then it corresponds to the previous year to locate his Ming Gua number. For example, if born on January 10, 1954, his solar year of birth is 1953. If born on February 9, 1954, his solar year of birth is 1954.

Like the houses, there are 2 groups of people, the East Group (Ming Gua 1, 3, 4, 9) and the West Group (Ming Gua 2, 6, 7, 8).

As seen in the image, the 4 favorable orientations and the 4 unfavorable orientations for the people are the same as the 4 favorable and 4 unfavorable sectors for the houses:

· Favorable guidelines: N, E, SE, S for people in the East Group and SO, O, NO, NE for people in the West Group.

· Unfavorable orientations: SO, O, NE, NO for people in the East Group and N, E, SE, S for people in the West Group.

Favorable orientations for people are the most conducive to having the front when sitting, working and lying down (at bedtime, the orientation of the upper part of the head is counted). These orientations are permanent and are valid for any house or workplace.

The 4 sectors (houses) and the 4 favorable orientations (people), starting with the best, are:

F1: Sheng Chi - Prosperity:

It provides vitality, prosperity, success and progress. It is ideal to guide work desks.

F2: Tien Yi - Health:

· F3: Yen Nien - Relationships:

It has to do with family, offspring, partners and relationships. Excellent guidance to improve the life of the couple.

F4: Fu Wei - Stability:

Good luck in general, brings peace and harmony. Help in the studies. Very good to sleep.

The 4 sectors (houses) and the 4 unfavorable orientations (people), starting with the worst, are:

D1: Chueh Ming - Total Loss:

It favors misfortune and disease. Your energy is the most harmful and dangerous.

D2: Wu Guei - Five Ghosts:

It favors discord and problems in personal relationships and bad luck at work.

D3: Liu Sha - Six Curses:

It favors fire, injuries, accidents and lawsuits.

D4: Huo Hai - Bad luck:

It favors discussions, injuries and minor accidents.

Compatibilities between people and houses.

People may or may not be compatible with the spaces they inhabit depending on their personal Ming Gua and the Trigram of the house. To know these compatibilities we compare the personal Ming Gua with the Trigram of the house. According to Feng Shui, there is more balance and harmony when people live in houses of the same group: people from the East Group in houses from the East Group and people from the West Group in houses from the West Group.

When this compatibility is not possible, we turn to the Five Elements. The East Group is associated with the elements Water, Wood and Fire, and the West Group with Earth and Metal. For example, if a person 3 (East Group, Wood) lives in a house 6 (West Group, Metal), it is recommended to use the Water element in the decoration components, which nourishes the Wood and weakens the Metal.
