V. Tomberg: The Four Sacrifices of Christ, by Pedro J. Martínez González


I will begin to contribute in a series of articles the work of Valentin Tomberg, especially expressed in the field of Christology, for two main reasons; because I consider that it constitutes the Heart of Spiritual Science, and because your personal contribution in this Sacred Field is fundamental in the Understanding of the Mystery of Christ in His Manifestation in the 20th Century, deepening and expanding what was previously contributed by Rudolf Steiner, especially in what Regarding La Parusía, Second Coming or Etheric Manifestation of the Christ.

The sacrifice of Christ in ancient Saturn
If we look at Cosmic Evolution, as presented in Steiner's "Hidden Science", some important questions will arise. To them belongs the following: in each Stage of Evolution, (in the previous Stages of Saturn, Sun, Moon and the current one, Earth), a spiritual Hierarchy has passed through a state close to the "human state". On the other hand, the human state itself is linked to a Sacrifice, which we characterize as "the Mystery of Golgotha". So, the preceding stages of human experience in the world, when the Arkai, Archangels and Angels experienced the human stage, have they taken place without any corresponding Sacrifice?

The answer is: in all the cosmic stages a sacrifice has actually taken place, which is increasing in its measure. having been the Mystery of Golgotha ​​indeed, the only event that was linked to the passage through death. But it had different degrees, in which the Fact of Sacrifice, because it had taken place in previous Cosmic Stages, was, to some extent, repeated.

What was it about Saturn Evolution? The beings who then experienced the human stage realized this by being placed between cold and heat.

During the Evolution of the Sun, beings that were in the human stage were located between light and darkness. This is the difference.

The descending Evolution of Saturn, until the middle of its evolutionary Period, consisted in that the principle of hardening, due to the cold, was increasing more and more. After the Half of the Evolution of Saturn began an ascent, which led to The Thrones (Spirits of Will), put at the end of this Cosmic Stadium the seed of the Atma, in the being of the physical body (of the current human being).

The Transformation that took place in the middle of Saturn's Evolution, the Change in Orientation of it, was not merely a mere turn in a circle. In the World nothing revolves at all, everything is made of beings or groups of beings. That is, by affirming that the Evolution of Saturn experienced an Ascent, we are referring to a FACT. And what happened as a spiritual fact was that a Mysterious Being, in the Middle of the Evolution of Saturn, in the Time of the most icy cold, made the transformation of that cold into volitional heat.

This must be represented as follows:
the Test of the Evolution of Saturn was that the will was “tied” in immobility, and a being managed to turn this evolution of Saturn, making the Sacrifice of being in the immobility of the freezing cold and staying upright in it. standing in an immovable will produced this return in the evolution of Saturn. A repetition of this distant event was the moment in which Christ Jesus, nailed to the cross, pronounced the Words: "Elí, Elí, Lama Sabachtaní ...". This call to Eli is the Memory, the Repetition of what took place on Saturn: the primary crucifixion in the world.

And when the Father, later, sent the Son to Earth, to go through Death on the cross, it was something that had already happened on Saturn and lived in Knowledge of the Paternal Entity.

The sacrifice of Christ in the ancient Sun

Let us continue now, until the Evolution of the Old Sun, and ask ourselves about the event that caused the Change in its development, producing a Reascent, so that the descent could not continue for an eternity. What fact underlies this Reality?

Since nothing happens automatically in the Universe, it is always Spiritual Facts that underlie each Event.

The answer is that, during the Evolution of the Solar State, a Tension arose between light and darkness, which translating it into moods, supposed to be the being of the Happiness or unhappiness. That is to say, everything in the soul that can be experienced as a state of happiness or unhappiness is a result of the tension between light and darkness, thus being how the angels acquired their human stage.

For the soul, the being of happiness consists in the existence of a united knowledge. While the being of unhappiness, on the contrary, consists in experiencing complete solitude. The darkness of loneliness constitutes the being of unhappiness. Within the framework of this Polarity between loneliness and union with the whole, the Evolution of the Angels took place as they passed through the human stage. Through spiritual research it is known that Christ was His Guide in the time of the Old Sun. This does not mean possessing the greatest power over all beings, but providing the greatest sacrifice for evolution. Rising sun.

Each sacrifice that was then made consisted in that an archangelic being united internally with the entity of Christ. This being done through that union of that immovable point, of the immobile point of absolute solitude.

When Christ submerged, incorporated into an archangelic being, in the darkness of the solitude of the Old Sun, his Irradiating moral-spiritual center was formed on this Planet. From this Center the Sun radiated with its Light, while the midpoint itself was in darkness and complete solitude. And again, what happened during the Old Sun was repeated in the event of the Mystery of the Gotagota, as well as the physical crucifixion was the repetition of an event that it took place during the Evolution of Saturn, so was the night of Gethsemane the repetition of the sacrifice in the ancient sun. On that night the Change (Reascent) in the Solar Evolution was repeated.

The sacrifice of Christ on the ancient Moon

The first side of the Ancient Moon was turned towards the Sun, while the other side was in darkness. In his "Occult Science" Steiner describes the consciousness of the lunar inhabitants. These possessed in the illuminated part a consciousness given to the Sun, while in the part submerged in darkness they possessed an imaginative consciousness. There was therefore a pendular movement between the tonant sun and perception, lacking sound from the lunar environment.

The danger to which mankind was then exposed was that of becoming separated into two humanities, made up of men (lunar, the current angels), who possessed external perception and in men who only possessed the perception of the sun (of their Weave spiritual). As a consequence of this danger they would have arisen, later on Earth, if a Sacrifice, a materialistic and a mystical humanity had not taken place.

This Sacrifice, made by Christ in the Ancient Moon, consisted in the fact that He joined an archangelic entity, with which he had joined in the Old Sun. Christ went to the dark part of the moon to awaken in it the memory from the sun and thus remove the danger of oblivion. This sacrifice of plunging into oblivion, so that from it, he could resurrect the memory, was made in the Ancient Moon.

This Sacrifice also found a reflection in the Events of Golgotha, the Last Supper, where Christ was in the circle of his disciples, when he broke the bread, saying ... "do this in remembrance of me, do this to awaken the memory of me person". The last supper was the repetition of the sacrifice on the moon; the mystery of the Resurrection of memory, from oblivion.

The sacrifice of Christ on earth. an overview

Image We now arrive at the Development of the Earth, the Fourth Cosmic Stadium, because during the same Sacrifices of the Entity of Christ have also taken place. The first of these took place during the Lemurian Period. Here Christ joined that archangelic entity with which he had previously joined on two occasions. This produced a change in human organization (already earthly). It was manifested in that the human being became an upright creature. It could be said that in the physical-volitional organization of man a movement of will was set in motion that made man stand up from the horizontal position to the verticality.

This Sacrifice consisted in the fact that the Entity of Christ was so united with the Archangel Jesus, that it was standing, still as a column; Christ created the absolute vertical, at that time. he was standing from the Father's world to the depths of the earth, in an immovable column of will. And the Effect of this Sacrifice was the Repeat of the Sacrifice Performed on the Old Saturn, it was that men could stand up. a current of will arose in the physical body, Saturn's primordial will was awakened. The man came to stand up, and through it, became properly human.

At the beginning of the Atlantean Period, where there was a danger that human soul life could be fully absorbed by the vital processes of the organism (etheric), it was taken out, elevating it, the soul life, separating it from the vital processes of the etheric body. Again, there is behind this Fact a new Sacrifice of Christ. While in the First, Performed during the Lemurian Period, it was an erect standing in the shape of the obelisk, a complete and motionless VERTICALITY. The Sacrifice of Christ at the beginning of the Atlantean Era was a work with outstretched arms, a broadening of the soul in the horizontal. The psychic life was extracted from the vital processes, when a broadening current was introduced into it.

As a consequence of this broadening of the life of the soul, the human language of the vowels emerged. Language arose due to the overcoming of isolation, of loneliness. Every word that man pronounces is in essence, an overcoming of the state of loneliness. Language, raising the voice to extract the sound of oneself, is itself the overcoming of loneliness.

This happened at the beginning of the Atlantean evolution, at the time when the human being, after having left the "state of paradise", had to go through feelings and experiences of loneliness, from which language was born. The pain of loneliness gave rise to the first tone of a human voice. And this event was again a repetition of an event that occurred in the ancient Sun, where Gethsemane Cosmic Night took place at the Middle (evolutionary) Point of this Planet.

Image Entering the end of the Atlantean Development, the Third Sacrifice of Christ took place. This worked in such a way that the organization of the human self was extracted from the astral, that is, from the forces of thinking, feeling and wanting. This was the EFFECT of Sacrifice. The offering itself consisted again in the Union with that Archangel, in such a way that a current arose in the human organization, which first freed the faculty of human thinking with respect to the astral body, the self being able to manifest its activity in this area, first.

This Sacrifice had the effect of covering the memory, of the imaginative faculty. The faculty of the inner perception of the etheric body was covered by this Sacrifice. And because the memory of the Atlantean man was weakening more and more, a new faculty emerged the language of consonants, that is, of human language as we know it today.

Talking can only be done when the memory has been lost. Imagine that they had constantly before you all the experiences of the past: they could never have spoken. You can only speak when the entire memory treasure has been turned off; and when it is extracted from the dark content of the forgotten, when from the darkness of the forgotten the language rises as a creative memory.

You can only speak when the memory has been silenced, when it has been brought to darkness; making it resurface later through the creative activity of the self. This memory can not only bring expression to the human soul, but can also inform about objective events.

This Sacrifice that took place at the end of the Atlantean Time was a repetition on earth, of the lunar sacrifice. Just as in the Old Moon it was about, through oblivion, producing the resurrection of the Sun's memory; that was how it was now that the memory had to resurrect in the figure of human language. These three Sacrifices of Christ therefore present facts that possess a cosmic prehistory, facts that have already occurred in the past.

Image The fourth sacrifice, the Mystery of Golgotha, has no model in the past; It is completely new, especially from the moment Christ died and descended into the spheres of the interior of the earth.

The Last Supper has a Cosmic Model;
The Crucifixion on the hill of Golgotha ​​has its Cosmic Model. Entering death was the New, lacking Model. Thus, in the Mystery of Golgotha; We have a process that was no repetition.

But the Mystery of Golgotha ​​has its Karmic Consequences. To these belongs the need for the Return of Christ in the etheric, that is, the need for the fifth sacrifice of Christ.

While the previous Three Sacrifices during the Earth Stadium, were in some ways, Repeats of Past Offerings, the Fifth Sacrifice of Christ is a predetermination of the future. The Mystery of Golgotha, like the Descent inside the Earth, exist by themselves, they have no previous model or future image. The Fifth Sacrifice of Christ Assumes an anticipation of the future evolution of jupiter.

The Return of Christ in the Etheric world has a Meaning not only for man, but also for nature. It is the following: just as the etheric body of man, after death, so to speak, dissolves; but on the other hand, there remains a spiritual extract of it, which is preserved when passing through death and that accompanies man in his successive incarnations. This also maintains a region of
Nature, which in relation to common nature is in a relationship similar to human.

This "extract" of the human etheric body is properly the Budhi or Spirit of Life. thus a region of spiritual life will also arise in nature as a consequence of the return of Christ in the etheric world.

In summary…..

-Sacrifice of Christ in ancient Saturn:

Polarity between cold and heat, expressed in the crucifixion, repeated in lemuric time.

-Sacrifice of Christ in the ancient Sun:

Ported by archangel Jesus, polarity between light and darkness, expressed in the night of Gethsemane, repeated at the beginning of the Atlantean time.

-Sacrifice of Christ on the ancient Moon:

Ported by archangel Jesus, awakening memory of the spiritual sun. expressed at the last supper, repeated at the end of the Atlantean time.

-Sacrifices of Christ during the current earth state:

Steiner began speaking in 1913 about the three Sacrifices of Christ, prior to the Mystery of the Gota. Both this year and 1914, they seem to offer the necessary ground for the treatment of this Theme; which he tries again and again, in conferences given in different parts of Europe.

Later in the conference held in Basel on June 1, 1914, he mentions only one archangelic being and not the Natural Jesus: t that entity that later, through s of the Mystery of the G lgota, was incorporated into the body of Jesus of Nazareth, had previously entered the soul of an archangelic being

Previously, in previous conferences, Steiner always refers to the Natural Jesus, describing him sometimes, as a being in his essence like an Angel, sometimes an Archangel, but without speaking clearly of the existence of an archangelic entity next to him : "... She lived as an entity similar to an Archangel ... the entity that led this life of Angel-Archangel was essentially the one who was born later as a man and was described in the Gospel of Luke as the child Jesus ..." (Pforzheim 7 March 1914).

CLARIFICATION 1: Valentin Tomberg expands the statement by Rudolf Steiner, when he clarifies that there are two Qualities of Descent for spiritual entities, the descent by Fall and the Redemption Descent, which is what concerns us. When an entity descends from Archangel to Angel through Redemptive Sacrifice, it actually ascends to higher degrees of Spiritual Composition. In the Impulse of Christ, the most "Great" is not the most powerful, but the one who sacrifices the most.

In the Mystery of Golgotha ​​there is a group of entities: Ánima Cándida, Jesús Natánico, Arcángel Jesús, Jesús de Nazaret, Buda Gautama, Elias, Sofía… .etc. Topic that is impossible to address now in due course and depth.

But in both the Paris conference and the Basel conference mentioned above, Steiner speaks exclusively of an Archangel in whose being Christ is incorporated, not mentioning at any time the entity of the Natural Jesus. Thus, it seems that Steiner treated from two different aspects, in different conferences, this incorporation of Christ into the being or soul of both an Archangel and the entity of the Natural Jesus.

Valentin Tomberg presents differently in his work the relationship between the entity Jesus and this Archangel. Marie Steiner also, in her commentary to these conferences, published in the first edition of the same, presents the thought of working together with three entities in the realization of the Sacrifices before the Mystery of Golgotha:

"... while Christ, when penetrating the soul of the Archangel, joins with the primordial image of Jesus ... The Greek gods are projections through the planets of that being similar to an Angel ..." Marie Steiner.

Image Note that Marie does not speak of the Archangel Michael, but simply speaks of "the Archangel." Mentioned this complicated relationship of the three entities: Christ, the Archangel - to whom Tomberg gives the name of Jesus - and the Natural entity, let's now study the lectures in which R. Steiner mentions the image of Michael fighting the dragon.

CLARIFICATION 2: Remember that the entity of the Natural Jesus corresponds to the unfallen aspect of humanity, Preserved in the Elohim Sine. Before it occurs

At the conference held in Berlin on March 10, 1914, Steiner says in speaking of the third Sacrifice ... ”this is the imaginative representation of the third event of Christ, Saint George or the Archangel Michael, the later child Jesus Natánico, penetrated into his soul for the entity of Christ. "

According to this phrase, as it was written first by the stenographers who transcribed the conference and then by the editors, we have Steiner here to identify the Archangel Michael with the Natural Jesus, is this possible? Is it possible that Michael and Jesus Natural are the same being? These are questions that arise, with all rights, after reading the conference. It is up to the reader to solve them, also considering in his reflections the possibility of error in shorthand transcription or in the printing of the text. (Remember that Steiner did not have time to review his conference notes.)

The meaning of this phrase, as it appears in the text, would lead us to a surprising identification of two spiritual entities (with their corresponding Qualities and Missions).

There are conferences - for example. Stuttgart 5.3.14 or Pforzheim 7.3.14-on this subject, in which we do not find such "problematic" phrases. In those, in which Steiner mentions only the entity of the Natural Jesus, that is, where he makes no mention of the Archangel, referred to in later conferences; also refers to the Archangel Michael in his fight against the dragon, considering it as: "... imaginative expression of the third precursor event of the Golgotha ​​Event,,, " Munich 30.3.14

Looking at the set of references offered by Rudolf Steiner when dealing with this issue, we see that they are exposed only in relation to the third sacrifice. In the previous two - in ancient Lemuria and the principle of Atlantis - the Archangel Michael is not mentioned at any time; Nor is Jesus Natánico mentioned, but only "an Archangel." And how is this reference to Michael?

"... a reflection of this spiritual event is found in the myths of all peoples, in the figure of St. George defeating the dragon ... In the cult of Zarathustra the high Solar Being approaches us, and as an image of it is shown in Greek consciousness the celebration of the cult of Apollo ... ”Stuttgart 5.3.14

ImageRudolf Steiner offers here three examples of three different cultures in which there is a certain image of this third sacrifice of Christ. Would it be possible to talk about an identity between the beings of St. George, Michael, Ahura Mazdao and Apollo? Are these identical beings or would it be better to consider, since they work very closely in the same spiritual impulse, the differences between them?

Let us take again a Steiner conference of 25.10.09 belonging to the cycle "The Impulse of Christ and the development of the consciousness of the I". Here he says, referring to Apollo ...

"... this Bodhisattva, whose entity has been preserved externally under the name of Apollo ..."

Here appears a new aspect of Apollo. Would Apollo then be a being identical to Michael, identical to a Bodhisattva ...? But, could someone also argue now, Steiner also said that the Greek gods were luciferic entities? ... then ... then ... we are faced with very complex issues in their treatment, so deep and broad in themselves that they require a specific differentiation and an attitude of openness in the soul of those who receive them, in order to solve the apparent contradictions that they entail.

Again it is the reader who has to decide how to approach them. Tomberg, like Steiner, always worked in the sense of deepening and discernment.

It would be important to emphasize that Michael's being is intimately linked to the Being of Christ. References of this are found in
the Bible in

the Christian Tradition, in the work of Rudolf Steiner, in the work of Valentin Tomberg and in many other sources. Michael is called "The Face of the Lord, " thereby implying the closeness he is in regard to the Being of Christ.

In this sense, Michael is, say, executor and participant of everything that has its Origin in the Impulse of Christ. In this sense, the reference given by Steiner in relation to the third sacrifice of Christ is understood: Michael works in and with all the Effects of these Sacrifices of Christ.

Important aspects concerning the being of Michael and the Archangel Jesus that could bring a lot of light are found in the Cycle “The Four Sacrifices of Christ and His Return in the Etheric World” (which I will publish in the form of articles, if there is interest in the topic); cycle of Valentin Tomberg, as well as in different conferences of the cycle "Anthroposophical considerations on the Old Testament", by the same author.

The deepening of both texts can lead the reader to clearly differentiate between the two archangelic entities Michael and Jesus.
