Saturnino de la Torre interview, "When a person is recognized, it grows

  • 2013

What did you learn as a teacher?

The important thing is the love, the treatment, the building of trust. Transmit to the student the idea that you believe in him.

In all?

Every student has at least one ability that makes him stand out; we must help him find it, because when a person is recognized, he grows and gives himself to learning. Science is showing us that thought and emotion are united, thus a new concept is born

Sentipense

There is no human action, says the biologist Maturana, without an emotion that establishes it and makes it possible as an act. Both thinking and acting occur in the space determined by emotions.

And how do you take the classrooms?

Being aware that you learn with the whole brain. Word, image, music, symbols, reinforce each other.

Does that mean you have to relate music to mathematics and language?

Yes, you work with integrating projects of various disciplines, life is incorporated in the classroom.

And what do we get with that?

So far our education has been based on packaged content and the student has fed on this type of food.

It doesn't sound very good.

You need another type of food that helps them develop skills, knowledge, skills, attitudes, values ... We are training the person, being.

Tell me your experiences.

There are young people who have reached high school without feeling any emotion towards knowledge, simply because we have removed the emotion from the classroom.

Pure paperwork for the future.

So is. We have to change our conscience, in education we need basic, vision reforms, to realize how important values are, relationships. My function is not to teach, but to make the student learn.

It is clear that something is wrong.

We have gone through four major stages in education. In the agricultural era the foundation of education was beliefs. In the eighteenth century industrialization came and with it instruction, knowledge of science. In the eighties, telecommunications appeared and we passed from knowledge to skills, from believing to having: knowledge, wealth, power ...

And now?

We are in the know-how, and we must educate to be. Simplifying a lot, educating is getting the skills and goodness in people. In every human being there is creativity and there is goodness, why not try to share it?

Creativity is one of its themes.

Thirty-eight years of research. In childhood we have great creative potential that then falls asleep and emerges, at best, in the face of necessity, in the face of adversity. Wouldn't it be better to incorporate it as a tool since childhood?

How?

That is the easiest thing to do: let it be done. 95% of students are creative and only 5% of adults are, what happened?

Have you lost along the way?

Yes, for the closed patterns of education and society. The student has the ability to create ideas, to invent, to vibrate, to get excited. And emotion is the most important pattern for creativity to emerge.

And to keep it afloat?

Promoting its expression and educating it according to the ages: in early childhood it is expressed through fantasy; in school age, in adventure and incitement to discovery; in adolescence, in challenges, and in youth, in the search for innovations and social projection. And it works through integrating projects.

And what is the essence of these projects?

The path is to create the conditions for creativity to emerge in them and applaud it. If a student intervenes with something creative, they must be applauded literally. The feeling he feels for that recognition of his teacher and classmates is indelible. If you recognize a small thing, it multiplies.

Creatives there are many. What should be applauded?

Creativity must take courage, leave itself so that the other benefits, and when others receive that and get excited, and feel and touch them, creativity is spread and multiplied. It's about creating skills, attitudes, habits, basic skills.

I get it.

It is necessary to train in the flexibility, that is one of the important values next to the adaptation of the creativity, who has assumed them will not have failures because it will be able to move, to adapt to situations.

... Condition for happiness.

It is about creating a scenario rather than a classroom, of using all kinds of resources that have an emotional component. Behind every great idea is an emotion, a deep passion, a desire, a need to make and communicate.

Don't we ask the classrooms too much?

When I am teaching mathematics, with my way of doing I am transmitting implicit values. When i take conc
