  • 2015

Holistic Education was born approximately in the 90s. Its predecessors or creators, define it as an education where all the methods that have been carried out so far are restructured, and so on. create a science that has no limits. But it was not until 2005 where a little more than 3000 educators around the world signed a document, and what was called the World Declaration for Holistic Education for the 21st Century. This statement contained important points, which indicated which path this education would lead to; and among them were: New educational paradigm, Learning communities, Multiple learning styles and intelligence, Integral education, Universal love, Earning in education, Sustainable development, Man as a multidimensional being with a spiritual heart, Education as an evolutionary process of consciousness, Transdisciplinarity, Lifelong, meaningful and integral learning, The new mission of the educator and Moral development

Holistic education is based on the purpose of human development, and that is why it is believed to be an education for the new times . Holistic education seeks that each of us as human beings find our true identity and what the true meaning of life means, as well as the real meaning of it. This can be achieved through contact with nature, with other people who do not teach and demonstrate the true values of life.

This education is also based on principles to create a coherent education and therefore a value-based learning.

In itself, holistic education seeks to interest and awaken in people the true interest in life as well as learning, and in this way manage to restructure or reform education in everything that refers to it.

Holistic education works in six different dimensions, such as the emotional, spiritual, aesthetic, bodily, cognitive and social aspects.

It is very important to note that the proposal of this education is based on the main scientific and pedagogical characteristics, such as Dewey, Montessori, Steiner, Pestalozzi and Rousseau. In addition to some important theorists such as David Perkins, Howard Gardner, among others, agree on the importance that people can and have the ease of accepting as well as adapting to new situations and thus other situations.

The 10 holistic principles

Principle 1: Purpose of holistic education is human development

Principle 2: The human being has an unlimited capacity to learn

Principle 3: Learning is a process of practice and experience

Principle 4: Many and varied paths to obtain knowledge are recognized

Principle 5: Teacher and student are both in a learning process

Principle 6: Learning can only take place in an environment of freedom

Principle 7: Educate for democratic participation

Principle 8: Educate for a global citizenship and respect for diversity

Principle 9: Ecological education, a planetary awareness

Principle 10: Spirituality is the direct experience of totality and internal order.

Despite all this we must take some considerations that this type of education has, and that is that for many, and mostly defenders and protectors of the traditional teaching methodology, holistic education is very weak, in addition to being criticized since It is very difficult to apply in public educational centers, where many students normally attend for each classroom. Many also think that this is very good in many areas of education such as history and science, but it is not as good for example for spelling, and that is why it is criticized because not many accept that this way of teaching is only For different areas.
