Tolba Phanem: The Song of Your Soul

  • 2011

"I don't need a signed guarantee to know that the blood of my veins is from the earth and blows in my soul like the wind, refreshes my heart like rain and cleanses my mind like the smoke of the sacred fire" (Tolba Phanem).

When a woman from a certain tribe in Africa knows that she is pregnant, she goes into the jungle with other women and together they pray and meditate until the child's song appears.

They know that each soul has its own vibration that expresses its particularity, uniqueness and purpose. Women find the song, sing it and sing it out loud. Then they return to the tribe and teach it to everyone else.

When the child is born, the community gathers and sings his song.

Then, when the child is going to start his education, the people get together and sing his song.

When he starts as an adult, they all come together again and sing to him.

When the time comes for their marriage, the person hears his song in the voice of his people.

Finally, when the soul is going to leave this world, family and friends approach their bed and in the same way they did at their birth, they sing their song to accompany them on the trip.

In this tribe, there is one more occasion in which the villagers sing the song.

If at any time during his life the person commits a crime or an aberrant social act, he is taken to the center of the town and all the people in the community form a circle around him. Then they sing his song.

The tribe knows that the correction for antisocial behaviors is not punishment, but love and the memory of their true identity. When we recognize our own song we no longer have desires or need to do anything that could harm others.

Your friends know your song, and they sing it to you when you forgot it. Those who love you cannot be fooled by the mistakes you make or the dark images that you sometimes show others. They remember your beauty when you feel ugly, your totality when you are broken, your innocence when you feel guilty, your purpose when you are confused.
