The cure is in the listening

  • 2015

The great contradiction of the human being consists in listening to all the messages that come from the outside and not trusting those that come to us from the inside of our body, which is the one who really knows what is best for us.

How many signals does our body send us throughout the day? How much information could we have stored at this point in our lives, if we had simply stopped to listen to what the body wants to tell us?

We know that the body has great wisdom, a beautiful and perfect structure, that over the years we mold at our whim and that we end up deforming and turning the wrapper into a defective shell and full of ailments. We inhabit an unknown space and become your worst enemy. Babies have the privilege of keeping alive the internal dialogue with their own body. They respond to all the signals that the body sends them, they live connected to their interior, regardless of external norms.

Unfortunately, this precious treasure possessed by the human being that is the ability to connect with his own body, over the years is being lost. We are separating more and more from our body, we forget the importance of being connected to it and we turn it into "something" unknown, alien to us, of which we know little or nothing and with which we barely communicate. Even so and despite not paying enough attention, or rather the attention it deserves, it always remains with us, as our faithful friend, the one who is always there when you need it most. It is true, that sometimes it protests and manifests the need to be heard through pain, discomfort, which can be physical, mental or spiritual, but even on those occasions we also avoid its signals, we ignore them or simply make others Listen to them for us.

When the pain manifests itself, it is when we realize something so obvious, that we have a body and that is when we communicate with it from protest, criticism and anger. We feel upset and pissed off, because we interpret the pain as if it were a rebellion. The body is revealed against us, it temporarily becomes our enemy. It goes from being that "something" forgotten for years, to a kind of hindrance, and that is when we look for what we might find inside. We went to the specialist in search of the "magic potion" that restores our health and eliminates that pain that bothers us so much and that is when we ask him, the million dollar question Will you heal me? How many times have we heard this question from our mouths and how many times have we asked it, without realizing it, without being aware that the answer is really inside us? The healing power is hidden within us, in our body are all the mechanisms of self-healing that are waiting to be activated through listening.

The great contradiction of the human being consists in listening to all the messages that come from the outside and not trusting those that come to us from the inside of our body, which is who really knows what is best for us, since in He is the elixir of health, the best medicine for our disease and ultimately all the pharmacy that our body needs to maintain balance and prevent disease.

The key that opens up all that internal wealth is "listening." In order for us to make use of his wisdom, we must approach him, regain confidence in him and develop that capacity. Only then can we connect with him and only then will we get the body to put all its wisdom within our reach. We must promote internal dialogue with our body, and we must adopt the role of intermediaries in working with our patients. Our job as therapists is to intermediate between the patient and his body. Help him rediscover his body and get a little closer to him. We are guides that help the patient to return to his body, to find in his own body the origin of the imbalance and through our listening, he can activate the self-healing mechanisms of his body.

That task entrusted to us is not easy. On the contrary, the professional must have a great knowledge of his own body, develop his inner listening, learn to stop giving his "I" to make himself available to the patient's body, and that is why we must first work with ourselves. Because if we don't listen to each other, how are we going to listen to others?

When we talk about listening, we talk about the ability to perceive, feel and connect with our body and that of others. Pain is the manifestation that something does not work inside us. Long before it manifests, the body emits signals, sends a series of messages, informs us that something we are doing wrong. The real disease is distrust in our own body. The lack of dialogue with him is the cause of that disease, therefore the cure for that pain lies in the approach to the body and therefore in listening. Think of the times that we eat without being hungry, in all those times that even knowing that a certain posture causes us pain, we insist on maintaining it and above all, all those times that we follow the “advice” that comes to us from the outside like diets, gymnastics, etc., simply because someone says they are good, even knowing or intuiting that they are not recommended for us. Even so, we follow them closely without listening to who truly knows what is best for us, our body.

Undoubtedly, trust in our body plays a very important role in the development of listening skills. If we do not trust his wisdom, we do not listen and if we do not listen, we do not heal and eventually lose health. The professional who lacks listening will also not be able to guide the patient towards the path of self-healing.

At this point, many will ask you how to develop the ability to listen, well, as I said, the first step is to approach our own body. The most important thing is to be willing to know him, a close attitude of wanting to know, is the first step. From there, the body will respond by approaching us through expressing its needs. Once we have regained dialogue with our body, we will be prepared to approach the patient's body. This approach requires the ability of self-confidence in oneself and the ability of the professional to leave during the duration of the session his personal "I", to put himself at the service of the needs manifested by the patient's body. It is at that moment when we stop listening to our body and start listening to the other's.

The listening process involves the discovery of a wonderful world, that of the human body. Know how it works, how it responds to the manipulations that the professional's hands exert on him, how the different parts connect with each other, etc. The patient's body becomes a perfect machine in our hands and our job is to press the start button, so that it can begin to function and be able to activate itself, the process of self-healing.

It is surprising to observe how during the session, many patients do not have enough body awareness to indicate to the professional where it hurts, when and how the pain began, and even during the session they are not able to perceive what is happening in their body. Personally I have had the pleasure of meeting some patients who have been able to feel and record the different sensations that occur during the session. When this happens, it is how much the professional feels, that for a moment, for an hour, a few minutes or seconds he has connected with the patient's body and that his hands have provoked a reaction in him, helping them to feel and perceive the life that is inside your body. It is that listening of which I speak, which we must develop. Obviously this work is necessary throughout the world, but especially in health professionals, especially in those who focus their work on natural therapy, because we must not forget that this is precisely the difference to other professionals., in which our work is based on the integral and holistic view of the body, a unified and not partial vision of the body.

The body is a whole, and each patient is unique, this is the principle that should guide the work of every professional. We must always keep in mind that if we want to help the body restore health, we must first listen. We must let ourselves be guided by him. If there is that mutual trust between the professional and the patient's body, we will be on the right path of healing. Always working from the humility of feeling mere intermediaries between the patient and the body.
