Importance of chewing food correctly

  • 2013

Digestion begins in the mouth. The moment you chew your food, the digestive enzymes present in the saliva begin to break them down, preparing the nutrient absorption process. It is very important to chew your food well to achieve maximum absorption of all your vitamins and minerals.

How to chew correctly?

To form the habit of chewing correctly, try to count the times you chew each bite, trying to make them between 30 and 50 times. Try to put your cutlery on the table between each bite so you can focus only on chewing.

  • Chew each bite at least 30 times, until the food becomes liquid.
  • Chewing breaks down food and makes the digestion process in the stomach and small intestine easier.
  • Saliva helps in the digestion of carbohydrates.

Saliva also makes food more alkaline, which creates less gas [1].

If you are under pressure while eating, take some deep breaths, chew and try to relax. Taking the time to chew properly will help you enjoy the full spectrum of flavors and aromas that make up a meal.
