WHAT IS THE PHYSIOGNOM?

In ancient times, in Classical Greece, it was the study of those permanent bodily signs that indicate indelible conditions of the soul, as well as the study of the transient signs of the body that indicate temporal conditions of the soul.

The first indications of a developed theory appear in Athens, where one Zopyrus was recognized as an expert in such arts and later appears a manuscript on the subject supposedly attributed to Arist teles.

From the 18th century the main promoter of physiognomy in modern times was the Swiss pastor Johann Caspar Lavater. His influential essays on the subject were published in German in 1772 and enjoyed great popularity, being translated into several languages. The main sources of which Lavater intends to extract the "confirmation" of his ideas are The writings of the Italian Giambattista Della Porta (1535-1615) and the English physician and philosopher Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682).

Browne raises in his work the possibility of discerning internal qualities from the appearance of the face:

"There is certainly a Physiognomy because there are certain characters on our faces that carry in them the motto of our souls, in which even an illiterate can read our natures"

The "Criminal Anthropology of Cesare Lombroso", which achieved an ephemeral influence at the end of the 19th century, can also be related to physiognomy.

In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, correlations have been established between the intellectual quotient and the cranial volume, although this theory is currently rejected within the scientific field.

The level of testosterone (associated with aggressiveness) has also been related to characteristics such as the length of the fingers and prominent jaw (straight).

In their study Faces are analyzed both in their facial and cranial form, both frontal and profile in all their features and contexts.

There is a Chinese proverb that says:

"Look at a man's forehead to know what it will be and his mouth to know what it has been"

From this proverb it can be deduced that at present, through the study of physiognomy, the traces of past lives reflected in the current face of the individual can be deduced.
