Thoughts of Sivananda: Concentration

  • 2014

Swami Visnudevananda said of his teacher Swami Sivananda: "His thoughts are pure ambrosia." Each of the reflections that Swami Sivananda shared with the world remains in the ether. We just have to connect, tune in through reading or listening carefully to receive the pristine strength of his silence, of his hours of meditation. It is a collaboration of the Sivananda Center.

Concentration or dharana consists in focusing the mind on a single thought, and it is achieved when the person is free from all distractions.

When you sit to meditate,
Never think about your office work.
When you work in the office,
never think of your sick son,
nor in any other family duty.
How much you bathe,
Don't think about playing
When you sit down to eat,
Don't think about pending work at the office.
You must train yourself in attending the work that you have in your hands with absolute attention.

The Pranayama,
the reduction of your desires and activities,
the renunciation of objects,
loneliness,
the silence,
the discipline of the senses
and anger control,
Consolidate your power of concentration.

Those who practice concentration evolve rapidly.
They can do any job with scientific security and great efficiency.
Concentration purifies and calms the emotions that arise in the mind,
strengthens the current of thought
and clarify the ideas.
