Many people today wonder what is the difference between the soul and spirit of an individual, because we must know that the soul and the spirit are the two primary immaterial aspects that the scriptures attribute to the humanity.

As for the question of the soul against the Spirit, in the first place one could say that it is a very good one, there are some who do not believe that there is a difference, this is due to the fact that the Hebrew word for soul is nephesh, which literally means life, it is also used for animals, Gen 1: 20-24 and in man as a complete person Joshua 02:13, Exodus 21:23, the Hebrew texts mark the spirit as ruach and refers to how it is only the immaterial part of man, Numbers 16:22.

It can be confusing to try to discern between the precise differences between the two, the word spirit refers only to the immaterial facet of humanity, the human being has a spirit, but they are not spirits.

However, in the Scriptures, only believers say they are spiritually alive and it is discussed in 1 Corinthians 2:11, Hebrews 04:12, James 2:26, while unbelievers are spiritually dead as named in Ephesians 2: 1-5; Colossians 2:13.

The word soul can refer to both the immaterial and material aspects of humanity, unlike human beings who have a spirit, human beings are souls, in their most basic sense, the word soul means life.

However, beyond this essential meaning, the Bible speaks of the soul in many contexts, one of them is humanity's desire for sin, Luke 12:26.

The soul, as with the spirit, is the center of many spiritual and emotional experiences, Job 30:25; Psalm 43: 5; Jeremiah 13:17, whenever the word soul is used, can refer to the whole person, either alive or in the hereafter.

The spirit is always referred to as the immaterial part of man that has a spirit, the psyche soul is just what the Greek word implies, the makeup of man where we are all different from any other person.

The soul is the way you relate to others and how you understand yourself, the spirit is the way you relate to God, when you are reborn, you are born of the spirit John 3: 5-6, the spirit is part of the soul, just as the mind is part of the soul.
