Dreams: Deciphering to Understand By Rosa Ma

Galician

A dream can advise us, alert, prevent, compensate, diagnose, remember ... and make us more aware of things we overlook during the course of the day. It is a bridge of communication that goes from the unconscious to our conscious and as the language of the unconscious are the symbols, these are its alphabet and in our hands is the translation.

There is a whole general symbology regarding the meaning of dreams, but also in parallel there is a very peculiar and unique symbology, which only belongs to the individual who has produced the dream. It is like a tailored suit, made particularly and exclusively for him.

The first symbology could be called "Universal." Use symbols that seem to belong to the collective unconscious and that is why our minds can share them and use them when making a dream. We can find its meaning in books or the internet easily.

As for the second symbology that we could call "Personal", if we want to deepen and learn from our own dreams, it will require more effort and participation on our part, than a simple query of the dream symbol, in order to advance in the technique of deciphering and Understand our own symbology. As an example of this, say that I had a time when I dreamed a lot with my pet: my dog. It became a symbol of my own and in many of my dreams I interpreted it as a representation of my emotional part. In other dreams my sister appeared and I deduced that it was an aspect of my own personality. I have also met someone where my mother or father appeared, but they also represented parts of myself. We are the recipients of our own dreams and most of their symbols have to do with our own person, although sometimes and minority there are others that refer to people around us. In this section everyone must experience and investigate their own symbology, because it is totally individual and non-transferable.

We can find dreams with a mixed symbology.

When we begin its interpretation it is good to welcome it from all possible angles, that is to say if a universal symbol appears, we contemplate its meaning as such and on the other hand we will also ask internally its particular meaning for us, since at that precise moment we are as detectives to Stalking to gather the more clues the better, to find the plot of his argument and reveal his hidden and precious message.

It is important to observe the verbs that appear, as they will indicate the actions: running, climbing, lowering, fleeing, eating…. as well as the mood that is lived during the dream: happiness, fear, terror, anxiety, satisfaction ... The sum of all this will reveal its meaning to be able to translate it into an understandable language for our conscious.

At the time of its interpretation we will need a lot of patience, because only to reread its history, most of the time the first sensation will be to face a meaningless text, without feet or head: a true gibberish. This is quite discouraging, especially if we are beginners. It can be helpful to keep a diary that contains the events of the day, our most relevant thoughts and feelings of the day, so we will have a good reference of the possible ingredients that may have been part of it.

We do not always remember our dreams, although it is said that we dream every day. Dreams can be a source of learning for us, but we must remember that they are very ephemeral and fade quickly when we wake up, so it will be good to take the habit of writing them down as soon as we can, so that they do not fall into oblivion, in an empty bag.

There are techniques to help us in this need. Some advise leaving paper and pencil near the bedside table and going to bed with the mental order to remember the dream upon waking, just as sometimes we go to bed reminding ourselves of a certain time to wake up and although it may seem strange it often works.

From my own experience, to say that in times of crisis or personal growth they can become an element of self-help. They tell us things and discover parts of ourselves. In some of these times I have compiled and interpreted many of them. When we become friends with our dreams, a more intimate bond is created thanks to the trust we place in them, which allows us to remember them more easily. I classified them by dates and each one has its key title. The methodology I used was taken from reading some books and synthesized in the following steps:

  1. Write down as soon as you can sleep on a paper.
  2. Reread it and give a title I nailed the dream, a title that has value for us.
  3. Make a very simplified first version of the story. It could be one or two sentences that reflect the most relevant of the dream, like a synopsis of a movie. We can start by writing down some keywords, to break the ice and then we will find the appropriate phrase that can summarize your argument.
  4. Write down the symbols, decipher them: see if they can be universal and / or contemplate them also with our own individual symbology. In our own symbology it would be good to ask questions about each object or character.
  5. See what actions are committed.
  6. Observe what our emotional state has been during sleep.
  7. Finally, move on to the interpretation of the dream with the sum of all the previous data .

For the fourth step remember that the technique of "Free Association" can be very useful to decipher our personal symbols, valid for both those represented by objects and characters. We will ask ourselves questions that can be answered with a characteristic, which helps us to elucidate its meaning.
