World Reading Week

“The frontiers of education: An old proverb teaches that teaching to fish is better than giving fish. Bishop Pedro Casaldáliga, who lives in the Amazon region, says yes, that is very good, very good idea, but what if someone buys the river, which belonged to everyone, and forbids us to fish? Or if the river is poisoned, and poisons its fish, for the toxic waste they throw at it? That is, what happens if what happens is happening? (Eduardo Galeano)

To the reflection of the Uruguayan writer will be added stories of hundreds of people with the purpose of putting together a great book, within the framework of the World Week of Action for Education (SAME) 2009, which will take place between 20 and 26 of April. This year, under the motto Open a book, open the world, an important mobilization is expected to make the literacy of youth and adults a reality.

The reading of the compilation of texts - in which writers, artists and professors of literature have already participated - will be carried out before political representatives in order to demand that they comply with the commitment that in 2015, education for all is a fact.

People who want to participate in the initiative have several ways of doing so: they can send their own stories, sign a petition to demand that governments take the necessary measures so that all individuals see their right to access education, or read The big book

Since 2001, during the last week of April, the World Campaign for Education (CME) organizes the SAME, in which civil society organizations and the educational community work together to attract the attention of political representatives and society in general, on the need to make the right to a quality basic education real and effective.

Currently, 75 million children have never had the opportunity to go to school and 224 million have not been able to access secondary education.
