The Rune Hagalaz

The use of the Viking runes (from the root ' run- ' of the ancient Gothic, translated as ' secret ' or ' whisper ') mainly comprised writing in the ancient Germanic languages, especially in the islands of Great Britain and the region from Scandinavia, although it eventually expanded to the regions of Eastern and Central Europe during the Middle Ages . According to ancient Scandinavian beliefs, the origin of these runes comes from the gods. It is a gift that Odin gives to men.

These runes were also used for magical purposes . According to beliefs, they have the ability to materialize invocations and spells written on objects. And thanks to the German-Austrian writer Guido von List, and his system of modern divination of armanen runes, the power of the Viking runes has come to us today.

This time, we will talk about the Hagalaz rune .

Mythology of the Rune Hagalaz

The Hagalaz rune (also known under the names of ' hagall ', ' haegl ' and ' haglaz '), is the letter of the ancient futhark alphabet that equals the letter ' h' . And it can be translated as ' hail '.

In the Nordic culture, hail was a representation of the storm, destruction and cold. It is also a reverence to the forces of nature.

But in addition, the translation of one of the three runic poems with the Hagalaz rune that have been found says: ' Hail is the whitest grain; [...] is released by the gust of wind and when it melts it becomes water '.

In that way, hail itself has a contracara, the idea that from another perspective, the composition of hail is the same nature of water, so necessary for life.

The Hagalaz rune presents two variants in its representation, one with double bar, coming from the continental inscriptions, and another with only one, coming from the Scandinavian inscriptions.

Meaning of the Rune Hagalaz

This rune tells us about the hard times. It refers to that force that overcomes our control and teaches us that we must accept what life brings us .

It tells us of the inevitable blows we receive throughout our experience, but also of the capacity for resilience and rebirth again and better armed for what life brings us.

The meaning of the Hagalaz rune has to do with change, invention and the release of tensions. It can imply a break in the things you planned, leaving comfort and facing new challenges . Remember that the longer the onslaught lasts, the better you get up. Hail is part of nature, and is composed of the fundamental material of life .

The Hagalaz rune does not have an inverted position, but as is known, it operates on an inverted path. It offers you an opportunity for growth and evolution through pain and challenge. In the same way that the storm is necessary to maintain the dynamic balance of an ecosystem, difficult times are part of the natural cycle of things.

Don't forget it, whenever it has rained, it has stopped . And the Hagalaz rune tells us that we have a responsibility to learn from these storms in order to become more resilient for the next one, which in turn will be another opportunity to continue growing.

It's all in your ability to interpret it in a way that is meaningful, and not limiting.

You give meaning to what happens to you . That is the great act of creation that we are capable of.
