Sacred Geometry, the term refers to several forms that have been traditionally used in art, architecture and meditation for thousands of years. These same forms are also found in natural organisms.
Sacred geometry may seem somewhat esoteric, and a basic understanding of sacred geometry can provide a useful way to see our world that you can use in your own life.
What is sacred geometry?
Ancient cultures, including Christians, Hindus, Greeks and Egyptians, recognize that certain geometric patterns or shapes are repeated throughout nature. For example, the cells of a honeycomb are hexagons, and the shell of a snail is a spiral. Honeycomb and snail, these common patterns and shapes became known as sacred geometry. They were broken down into several numbers, mathematical formulas and specific symbols that the ancients believed were the building blocks for everything in the universe.
Modern science supports this theory. It has been found that the molecular forms that form the basis of life are, in fact, many of the same patterns identified by ancient cultures.
The knowledge of these sacred symbols and mathematical formulas allowed the construction of many historical buildings, such as the great pyramids of Egypt, the Greek Parthenon and the intricate temples found throughout South and Central America.
Meaningful forms and Numbers
- Sphere
The sphere is considered a container that can hold or hold all shapes. It represents unity, inclusion and integrity since all measures are equal in one sphere. Planets, seeds, cells and atoms are all spheres.
- Circle

A bull looks like a donut or an air chamber . The round sides are perfectly circular. Sacred geometry considers the bull a primary form in all existence. For example, the seven main muscles in the heart form a toroid.
- Vesica Pisces
In America, vesica piscis means the bladder of a fish . It is the almond shape that forms at the intersection of two circles of the same size when their centers touch.
Circles can represent the union of a sperm and the ovule, which leads to creation. It can also represent a common ground or a shared vision among people. In the Christian tradition, which symbolizes Christ.
- Platonic solids
Platonic solids are a group of 3-dimensional shapes. Each is made up of faces of equal size, like a pyramid shape with 4 equal faces. The five platonic solids are:
- Tetrahedron - 4 pyramid-shaped faces
- Hexahedron - 6 faces of a cube
- Octahedron - 8 faces
- Dodecahedron - 12 faces
- Icosahedron - 20 faces
The ancient Greeks believed that these five forms symbolize fire, earth, air, spirit (or ether) and water, respectively. These are the only five 3-dimensional shapes that can be made with faces of equal size. They are called Platonic solids because Plato identifies them in Greek times.
- The Metatron cube
In Judaism, Metatron is the angel who guards the throne of God. The figure of the Metatron cube has been considered sacred for millennia. The five platonic solids are inside the cube. Because of this, it is thought that the Metatrone Cube contains the basic components of creation.
- Prime
This is an ancient symbol found in many global cultures. The modern term is the flower of life. It is represented by several uniformly spaced circles that overlap each other to form a pattern like a flower. It is said, it represents the fundamental forms and patterns of space and time. All platonic solids, the vesica pisces and the Metatron Cube are found within the Flower of Life.
- The golden ratio
Also known as phi or the gold medium, the golden ratio is a mathematical relationship that occurs when two items have the same relationship when compared to each other, as the ratio of their sum compared to the larger of the two elements.
Studies have shown that people consider faces with proportions closer to the proportion of gold as the most attractive. Many forms in nature also show this relationship, such as certain flower petals, tree branching structures, shells, DNA molecules and hurricanes. Interestingly, the growth pattern of a Romanesco broccoli is arranged in an almost perfect golden ratio.
Sacred geometry in your life
Sacred geometry has played an important role in mathematics and engineering, but what can you do for your daily life? A greater understanding of sacred geometry can have many benefits.
It improves your spatial understanding and visual ability . Many projects require an ability to imagine what is needed within a given space, such as planning a home renovation, to determine what car size to buy or design a new garden. Practice the visualization of 3-dimensional shapes and dimensions will help with tasks like these.
It can help with meditation and personal awareness . Mandalas are specific forms used by various traditions to represent the universe and act as aids for meditation. You can work with mandalas to help your own meditation practice or you can simply decorate with symbols that are meaningful to you and place them as reminders in your home.
It promotes a greater appreciation of nature and the universe. Once you are familiar with some of the basic forms, you will begin to see how they are repeated in many places through nature and man-made structures.
