"I must know the truth, the truth beyond magic."

"There is no truth beyond magic, " replied the king.

The prince was invaded by great sadness. He said, "Then I will kill myself."

The king, through magic, made death appear. Death stopped at the

Door knocking on the prince. He shivered. He remembered the beautiful, but unreal

Islands and the unreal, but beautiful princesses.

"Very well, " he said, "I can accept that you are my wizard."

"You see, my son, " said the king, "you too are already beginning to be a magician."

John Fowles, excerpt from the book "The Magus".

Have you ever heard that a person's worst enemy is that same person?

Have you ever heard the word reprogram when you talk about a behavior or a belief?

A lot of time has been devoted to the study of human behavior. How is it that although there is something we know we don't have to do and we choose not to do it, we do it anyway. To a greater or lesser extent, these types of patterns are repeated in all of us in more than one circumstance.

Well, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) teaches us a new perspective on this. And it opens the door for us to understand that our behaviors, thoughts and beliefs often develop and act in a more mechanical way .

In addition, for some reason what is happening in our mind affects our body equally, for example in the case of psychosomatic diseases. And in the same way, what happens in our body affects us mentally, such as a depression due to poor diet or rest disorder.

By understanding these principles, we may perhaps restructure what acts in us, and thereby modify our beliefs and our behaviors in this regard.

We will then enter this interesting stream of therapy.

What is NLP?

NLP is a method to influence brain behavior through the use of language and other types of communication. This allows the person to recode the way in which their brain responds to stimuli. That way, it enables us to manifest new and better behaviors.

This psychotherapy was created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California, United States in 1970. They argued that there is a connection between neurological processes, language, and behavioral patterns learned through It's from the experience. And they understood that all this can be modified to reach certain goals in life.

NLP uses a methodology that allows people to model people's abilities, allowing them to treat problems such as phobias, tics, psychosomatic diseases, allergies, and learning disorders.

Since its inception, NLP has achieved a lot of popularity due to the pursuit of personal happiness and the improvement in professional development.

Although there are several interpretations of the NLP, they all agree that it is founded on the idea that people operate from maps that they create from experiences. That is, of his perception of the world.

It has been used to treat health conditions, including anxiety disorders, weight, and substance abuse. It is also known to have a positive impact on individuals with social or psychological problems.

How NLP works

NLP operates through the conscious use of language, which is what shows the world map that we have created through our life experiences. From that way, he analyzes the person's speech to decide where the limitations are in this image of the world. Then you take those spaces to start working in search of expanding that map to a more complete one, with more possibilities.

To make it more graphic, I will make a simple example. In a conversation, a person says: "There is something that bothers me . " That "something" is a hole in your speech because it does not specify what it is. When asking about that something, the person replies: "It bothers me that nobody understands me . " In this case, "nobody" is a generalization and therefore symbolizes another hole.

In this way you can continue to delve into the answers that the person gives and will eventually come up with the root of the problem, which is often much deeper than what the person consciously knows about himself.

This is an overly simplified example of what NLP allows us. For those interested in delving into the theme, here you can download the books The Structure of Magic I and The Structure of Magic II.

In turn, by being mind and body connected in a symbiotic way, one can also modify this representation of the world through the modification of their body language .

NLP Components and Cores

NLP can be understood from three broad components that are:

Subjectivity : The representations of the experience we have is subjective. This experience consists of the information captured by the five senses and language.

That explains why when we recreate an experience our heads, that event is represented by images, sounds, flavors, smells, and sensations. In addition, these subjective representations of experience have a structure. That is why NLP defines itself as the study of the structure of subjective experience . Behavior can be described and understood in terms of these subjective representations based on sensations. It includes verbal and nonverbal communication. Modifying these representations modifies the effect that this experience has on the person.

Awareness : We all know that consciousness forks in the conscious and unconscious mind. In this way the representations that this person creates can be rooted in an event whose information is stored in the unconscious mind. And therefore outside the perception of the individual.

Learning : NLP uses a learning method by imitation, which it calls modeling, which encodes and reproduces the behavior of a person with a richer experience. An important part of the coding process is the description of the sensory and linguistic representations of the subjective experience of that specimen during the execution of its activity.

Principles of NLP

There are 10 principles that are fulfilled in Neuro-Linguistic Programming and that are the fundamentals to understand your perspective. These are:

1. Each interior map is unique

This principle refers to the perception of the world that each person has. That is, the reality that everyone experiences is subjective, it is not the same for everyone. As we know, this map is generated from the personal experiences of each person. For example, a person who falls into a pool at age four may develop the concept of water as something dangerous for the rest of his life. That way, every time you see a river, you will feel fear.

And as we grow, the map becomes more complex and creating new roads.

2. The greater the number of roads offered by the map, the better it is.

A map that gives us more possibilities is a more complete and richer map. This allows us to choose between several paths to reach a certain goal, which will give us flexibility and new perspectives when it comes to finding solutions for the inconveniences that life poses. The map can be enlarged to the extent that we find those beliefs we have about the world that limit us in our daily actions.

3. Every pattern of behavior is based on a positive intention.

This is perhaps a controversial and difficult to understand principle, but it refers to the root that drives a certain behavior. For example, a person may be resorting to smoking behavior, but their underlying unconscious intention is actually to be socially accepted. In the same way, every pattern of behavior that a person is carrying out actually corresponds to a search to achieve a positive result . Even when that behavior is not in itself something good, in which case you have to change that path or analyze the result.

4. Experiences have structures.

Each experience is structured in a defined way. In turn, this structure is made up of a series of elements . If we modify the elements that compose them, we can modify the impact that experience has on the subject's life.

5. All problems are solved.

This principle teaches us that a problem in a person's life actually refers to a limitation in their experience map. That is, the lack of roads in the search for a specific solution. Therefore, it also presents itself as the possibility of broadening the representation of reality that this person has.

6. Everyone has the strength they need.

This principle is more related to personal development. It refers to the fact that many times the main limitations in a person's life are their own beliefs . The mentality of poverty, low self-esteem, lack of confidence or fear of success are some examples of that. Overcoming these barriers and with a change in attitude, the results that can be obtained are incredible.

7. Body and mind are a unit.

This refers to the symbiosis that exists between the body and the mind, where they together make up a functional unit . Every emotion or thought that occurs in the mind affects and is reflected in our body, and vice versa. Examples of this were already discussed earlier in this article. NLP argues, then, that a change in the thinking and belief of a person can be provoked by modifying his body language. If a person's body language is adopted with confidence, the brain interprets this signal over time and adapts to the new behavior.

8. The communication will be determined by its result.

This has to do with the fact that a communication has two parties, a sender or senders of the message and a receiver or receivers that exchange their roles. Each one contributes to the communication in an active way, since the person who listens interprets and resignifies the message influenced by issues that go beyond the speech of the person who speaks. It is said that the words that one emits correspond only to 10% of the message that is transmitted. The rest corresponds to other factors, such as body language and tone of voice.

9. There is no such thing as failures.

What a person perceives as a failure can actually be assimilated as a learning opportunity and choice to take a better path. That is, it enables you to overcome an obstacle and move in a more successful direction. In that way, your representation of the world becomes more complete and flexible.

10. If a strategy is not working, change it.

This principle refers to the fact that many times we close to only one path to reach a certain goal. If this does not work, we will continue trying the same way to frustration. It must be understood that a different result cannot be expected if the operation is not different. Otherwise, we will be stumbling on the same stone over and over again until we desist from the desired goal.

Benefits that NLP can offer you

As this therapy stream is aimed at directly attacking the root of the problem and modifying it to achieve new results, its applications have no limit .

It can be used to leave negative habits, such as smoking. It can also enable you to better control your actions and emotions in certain situations to achieve better behaviors, such as acting under pressure or job interviews.

You can also improve your motivation in work or personal life, or overcome those beliefs that are holding you back from getting the life you want.

NLP is another tool with which you can seek to shape your experience.

The reality you know is a construction that you have done throughout your life.

The human being's mind is wonderful, but it is rarely used to its fullest potential. The strength you need is within you if you dare to seek.

The road can be complex but not impossible.

You can have control.

If you work for it.
