Mirror neurons, empathy and how they help us solve trauma

  • 2015

Not long ago it was discovered that mirror neurons are the basis of emotional empathy. Scientists have finally found a rational explanation not only for the ability to learn by observing - which by the way is not exclusive to humans - but to feel what others feel. It is a neuronal system that allows the actions, sensations and emotions of others to be their own.

This system is fundamental to live in community, it is the basis of culture and allows us to know the intention of the behavior of others. It is what unites us to others, and therefore, contributes to our being more human.

But also, from my point of view, mirror neurons not only help develop compassion, but also heal our emotional wounds.

In order to heal an emotional wound, it is essential to relive the emotional sequence that caused it, even to a lesser extent. Repeating the traumatic event is not usually a good option for obvious reasons, and for that our psyche is already in charge of avoiding it, despite the push of our Being to finish closing the circle ...

Fortunately we have more options, and we can thank our mirror neurons for making our way easier. We do not need to relive the trauma, but it is enough to empathize with someone who tells us theirs ... And as every therapist knows, people whose problems are related to their own usually come to see. And who says consultation, says conversation between friends or any other situation in which you interact with another and try to help him.

When we really listen - not so much thinking about giving an answer or advice, but with the heart, feeling the other - our brain is activated in the same way as if you were living the problem of the other. Active listening is true empathy, and that is why putting yourself in the place of the other hurts: you are recreating your regret.

Unfortunately, as we do not know this, we allow our mind to be activated, who quickly seeks a rational response to stop feeling, mortgaging the opportunity for connection with the emotion of the other, and therefore with their own. And therefore, bypassing a possibility of resolving the traumas themselves.

But life, as is wise, invented the theater, movies, books and video games, not to entertain or control ourselves, but to feel through the scenic drama the emotions we wanted to deny in our lives, giving us another chance for resolution The discomfort that causes us to live all kinds of “ fictional ” scenes makes it easy for us to connect with, expel and resolve these stagnant emotions.

From my point of view, the violence, vices or addictions that result from an exaggerated consumption of video games or from believing the fantasy of the big screen real, is not a consequence of these, but that we ignore the opportunity we have to heal ourselves and that Thanks to our cultural hedonism, compulsive consumption and not introspection prevail. But everything will come ...

Little by little we will see how society makes this change of consciousness, from being carried away by these images to recognize its true therapeutic effect. But it is still early.

Only recently, information about processed and solved traumas in the morphic field of humans, or what is the same, in collective consciousness has become available. Because only in the last decades have we begun to process our emotional problems.

Collective consciousness consists of information packages that we define as archetypes or archetypal images. To create an archetype, the information must be complete in itself, that is, possess an inherent harmony. When a person suffers, processes and satisfactorily solves an emotional problem, he generates an archetype, a package of information in the collective consciousness.

The next time another person strives to solve the same problem in himself, thanks to the power of his intention, he will be able to access that resolved information, and it will cost him less to solve the problem than to the first person. In addition, the more people take advantage of this information, the more it strengthens, until reaching the critical mass point where the problem and its solution will no longer be such, but only knowledge. But hey, this will be the subject for another post in the future ...

Returning to the mirror neurons, he said that empathizing thanks to them allows us to solve our own traumas, but for this we must be aware of feeling the pain of the other, and not think about giving an answer. In addition, we must be aware that when we help, we are helping ourselves first.
