At the dawn of human civilization, many were the enclaves that formed throughout the planet. But special physical presence had the areas of Asia and Africa. And precisely from there comes the text of today, where we will know the legend of the lost city of Aratta .

Meet the legend of the lost city of Aratta

Many believe that before civilizations such as ancient Egypt, the city states of Greece and the Sumerians in Mesopotamia, little or nothing had saved some savages who lived in caves. However, research and discoveries lead us to assume otherwise.

Human history introduces its hands at the dawn of time. And it does at least 5, 000 to 10, 000 years in our past. And precisely in that dark era of which we hardly have any reference, the legend of the lost city of Aratta emerges.

What was Aratta?

Although nothing has been officially discovered, I know that Sumerian inscriptions and references to the city of Aratta have been found . Located somewhere in South Asia or the Middle East, its origins could be located beyond 2500 BC

While its mention is especially due to the more archaic Sumerian legends, it seems that there is some truth in its existence. However, today, although there are certain enclaves that could be candidates, nothing has been confirmed.

Among the possible origins, it is believed that the Sumerians could refer to Urartu, the oldest known Armenian empire. But it could also have belonged to the Jiroft civilization in Iran. These primitive inhabitants already used the writing and were very advanced in their time.

The legends about Aratta

According to Sumerian legends, Aratta was an ancient civilization . A country rich in a mountainous area whose Lord or Governor competed in power with Enmerkar himself. As it is known from writing, his name was Ensuh-keshdanna, at the same level as the great ruler of Uruk, the aforementioned Enmerkar.

For the Sumerians, Aratta was a very rich area . A famous place for minerals, metals and crafts. It was also a source of gold, silver and lapis lazuli. Thus, for this civilization his goddess Inanna left from Aratta to Uruk. There he played a basic role as creator of kings.

Today many mentions are found in the oldest Sumerian legends about Aratta. In works such as Enmerkar and the lord of Aratta or in Enmerkar and Ensuh-keshdanna. Also in Lugalbanda in the mountain cave, or in Lugalbanda and the Anzu bird .

In all these legends, both the king of Uruk, Enmerkar, has various encounters with the lord of Aratta . Sometimes they are clashes, other pacts. So, it could be that these stories came from old more or less friendly encounters. Then they passed from generation to generation ending in legendary tales once Aratta disappeared.

Real existence of Aratta?

Although it is very difficult to confirm whether Aratta really existed, it seems that it was possible that there was a civilization in the area described in the Sumerian legends . According to the researchers, places like the Caspian Sea, northeastern Iran and other corners of that part of Asia are candidates.

Enclaves such as the aforementioned civilization of Jiroft have been found in recent years. Throughout the countries that now form the Middle East and Asia in its southernmost part there are many places to discover. Unfortunately, the instability situation makes investigations very complex.

Hopefully one day we can know more about the legend of the lost city of Aratta and other civilizations that hide over the centuries. A very valuable legacy for humanity and the generations to come .
