Red and Green Guide to Transgenic Foods

  • 2011

The need to know the evolution of the policies of companies in the field of transgenics and the deficiencies of labeling have led Greenpeace to carry out the Red and Green Guide to Transgenic Foods. This is a Guide in which two lists of brands, products and manufacturers appear, located in Red or Green depending on their transgenic policy.

The lists correspond to the Spanish food market and are prepared based on the responses received by producers and distributors of marketed foods and the statements that Greenpeace collects. It is a living document that is modified according to changes in the positions of the food industry, as well as the inclusion of new companies.

There are only foods that contain at least one ingredient or additive produced from soybeans or corn, which are the transgenic crops used for human nutrition in the EU.

Criteria of the Red and Green Guide to Transgenic Foods:

Green list:

It includes those products of which Greenpeace has proof that manufacturers have guaranteed that they do not use transgenics (or their derivatives, in their ingredients or additives).

Red list:

It includes:

products whose manufacturers do not guarantee Greenpeace absence of transgenics or their derivatives (in their ingredients or additives).

products for which we have found transgenics in the laboratory (in this case all the products of that manufacturer are shown in red).

products whose label contains transgenics or derivatives.

Own brands:

Section dedicated to the own brands of the large distribution chains (supermarkets). All products packaged with this brand are included, only of the own brand to which reference is made.

There are no organic foods in the Guide. Since all of them are transgender free because they understand that they are all transgender free.
