Gaia, the deity of the Earth

  • 2017

If there is a goddess who takes care of the Earth and each of her creations as children, that is Gaia . A deity always perfectly focused on the protection of the world that has formed with each of its details. But who is it really?

Gaia's mythology

The origins of the first writings on Gaia are lost in the mythological time of the ancient Greeks. The first allusions to the goddess are already found in La Teogon a de Hes odo .

According to the Greek writer, after the chaos that existed before the gods and the elementals took control, the deity also known as Gea emerged . Thus, in the primal state of the cosmos, with all its infinity, the goddess was already present.

Gaia, translated as "the broad-chested", is the oldest, most primal and origin goddess of all in life . His own name indicates that he is the one who gives food to each element of the cosmos, including the chaos itself before the deities put order.

Afterwards, this goddess began to create a world for us. First he traded with Uranus, which illuminated the entire starry sky and covered the hills and how much there was on the planet . From the union of both arrived Ocean, in the deepest currents.

But many other children also emerged from his chest and his relationship, such as Ceo, Crío, Hyperión, Tea, Rea, Játoto, Temis, Febe, Tethis and even Mnemósine . Finally, he gave birth to Chrono, the youngest, but also the most twisted. This son soon developed a deep hatred towards his father.

However, Gaia, as the mother of everything in the world, according to Hesiod, gave birth to many more children. From his body emerged the Cyclops Brontes, Steropes and Arges . Also the hecatonchires, terrible beings of 100 hands between heaven and earth called Coto, Giges and Briareo, with 50 heads each.

Gaia, a world in itself

Within this deity we find the world that governs us. For example, his belly, known as Tartarus. That is where Uranus hid the terrible and evil cyclops of one eye and the hecatonchires .

But the pain they caused to the Goddess led her to reunite her children, the Titans, who gave her obedience except the terrible Chrono . Gaia had made a sickle, a tool that the younger offspring used to castrate Uranus. From the spilled blood appeared new children like Erinias, the personification of revenge. Or the Giants and the Melias, powerful beings with armor next to the nymphs of the ash trees.

Aphrodite was born from the testicles of Uranus thrown into the sea by Cronus . And after castration, they would still be born from the belly of Gea Typhoon and Echidna.

The goddess of the Earth

As we observe, since the dawn of humanity, this goddess has been a source of life, because it represents everything we are . Living beings, mountains, seas, deserts ... each of us is a piece of the ancient Greek deity .

Today, this goddess is more current than ever. It still protects each of the beings that form it . Moreover, life itself fosters the right conditions so that it continues to emerge and always remains active. She keeps watching over each of her puppies, in the form, body and matter in which she believes .

That is why today the movement for the goddess is stronger than it was in 2000 years . And it is not strange, because the cult of the deity of Gea is really the protection of what makes us human beings. The Earth, with its biosphere full of life, is the only world that gives us shelter . If we don't protect and respect him as he deserves, who will?

We are the children of Gaia . Her last offspring in herself. We are part of a deity who loves us above all things . It is a myth, it is a symbol, it is a reality, it is life itself.
