Pedro Cavadas, the miracle surgeon

Pedro Carlos Cavadas Rodríguez (Valencia, 1965) is a Spanish plastic surgeon. He has achieved international fame due to his successes in limb transplantation and, recently, for carrying out, in 2009, the first face transplant performed in Spain (eighth in the world).

He graduated in Medicine in 1989 from the University of Valencia with Honorable Mention. He completed the specialty of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as a Resident Internal Physician at the Hospital La Fe in Valencia, obtaining the degree in 1995. That same year he obtained the degree of Doctor from the University of Valencia, with the qualification of Apto cum laude. He completed his training in the United States.

After a stage at the Levante Rehabilitation Center and the Clinical Hospital of Valencia, he returned to La Fe Hospital, with temporary stays in Kenya, where he has created a foundation for repair surgery.1

Dr. Cavadas, as he has recognized himself, became the prototype of a rich and ambitious surgeon. However, the death of his brother and his stays in Kenya led him to change his life and create the Pedro Cavadas Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to reconstructive surgery in Africa.2 The mission of the Foundation is, according to its own words, help those who cannot choose and at the same time return what has been given to us.

Iñaki Gabilondo in-depth interview with Dr. Pedro Cavadas, a plastic surgeon known for his success in limb transplantation. He performed the first face transplant in Spain and the world's first two-leg transplant simultaneously.
