Since last January, Riojan students can also actively participate in the Logroño Time Bank (BDT), as the University of La Rioja has installed a new branch in the campus. A few days after formally completing its first two years of life, the initiative is consolidated and serves as an example for people who want to implement this alternative economy system in their city.
Currently, the BDT has 200 partners and a wide range of offers and demands. “Among the most interesting tasks is being able to exchange a French class but better if we can do it while we learn to cook a typical dish of the country, ” says Tania Palacios, spokesperson for the project. There are also other curious services such as creating furniture with recycled wood, teaching how to take a baby in a shoulder bag or preparing wedding invitations.
"But without a doubt, the most demanded tasks are all those related to small repairs in the home and languages, " Palacios said.
In a time bank, the main objective is to promote the exchange of hours between the users that are registered in the system. The only exchange currency is time. In this way, equality is practiced and all activities are valued in the same way.
The meetings are held monthly and on each occasion, a recreational activity is prepared to promote knowledge among the partners. “All people love the idea, they think it is a good way to meet people, do small favors and help us with various tasks. The Time Bank of Logroño is underway and functioning thanks to the great reception it has had among citizens, ”he said.
The creation of the BDT took place in July 2007, through a collaboration agreement signed between the Culture and Communication Foundation and the Popular University of Logroño, whereby the first entity was responsible for promoting development and providing economic support and second, offer the space where the Secretariat is located.
