What is a sustainable community?

Currently the term sustainability has become so common that true meaning and meaning have been lost. Unfortunately, this word became, in many cases, a tool chosen by different types of institutions which, through their use and particular significance, pursued their own objectives and interests, forgetting their true essence .

We will try to define it, but keep in mind that it is a complex concept, so it may be difficult at first to fully understand. As I mentioned earlier, there are many meanings for this word, so the definition I bring to you is part of the perspective that resonates with me the most.

Then the Sustainable Communities, from the “theoretical framework” from which I rely, are formed by a group of people who congregate and build a specific organization that allows them to meet their basic needs, that is, the needs of any being human. This organization has as a central and exclusive feature that all activity carried out will have as its ultimate goal the care of the local and therefore global cosystem . In other words, the purpose of this gathering of people in an organized system is to be able to live on earth pleasing their digestive impulses, etc. while avoiding continuing to be part of the consumer demand which is endangering the planet.

Communities, as well as people, have needs that have to be met. Therefore, it is necessary that this organization be organized in such a way that these current needs are supplied but also the future ones, which will be characteristic of future generations. In other words, the vision of this type of communities is long-term, since its focus considers future generations as essential.

Sustainability, per se, does not refer to time or a specific period since as such it cannot be measured.

Why can't sustainability be measured?

Because just as the life of the human being is divided or rather it is contemplated in cycles, in nature these types of stages are also glimpsed. These cycles have to do with seasons, energy and nutrients .

This growth model is totally antagonistic to the traditional economic growth model that today is present throughout the world. This type of guidance is governed by a strict and unidirectional time . The underlying vision is that it does not need nature to sustain itself and has created or helped to give consistency to the illusion of separation .

If we start from the idea that the survival of all human beings living on planet earth depends solely on the balance of the ecosystem, then the sustainable community ensures this balance, necessary for the well-being of our nature, through the progressive integration of our Life to nature. In other words, it seeks to become part, as it was from the beginning, of the natural system from which it emerged and from which it was separated by false ideologies of separation and alienation.

These communities pose a path of regression, of paradoxically evolutionary regression towards the economy of our roots, and the pertinent deep gratitude. Through this movement, contrary to the usual one, it can be seen that our ancestors lived in a sustainable way for many centuries. Due to different circumstances, many of us have forgotten and lost the knowledge of our ancestors.

Many of us, mostly here in Latin America, come from indigenous peoples which are a clear example that you can live in a balanced way with nature, where both physiological and soul nutrition have a natural origin.

Living sustainably is not simply a way of life

Nor is it an ecological problem. It is not a problem because the challenge of these communities is precisely to give practical solutions both socially and environmentally.

How do you find the solutions? From the exploration of the roots of the problems, in all its aspects, both material and immaterial (psychological, spiritual), in order to collectively create a sustainable culture.

There are many projects in all parts of the world to create these communities and somewhat more people than by an inner call, perhaps, or by mere tiredness of the linear system in which we live, these communities seek to help the planet and themselves.

That is why today I bring you two sustainable communities in Argentina, which present this type of ideology, or similar, to be able to help nature and live in a way that is more in line with the balance of the ecosystem.

Amatreya

It is a sustainable community that is located in the south of Cordoba, more specifically in Alta Gracia . This community was founded in 1995, whose origin dates back to the merger of two communities, one from Argentina and one from Uruguay. Until this union, both communities subsisted separately but due to the similarity of their visions and values, in 2000 the community of Uruguay closed, joining its members to the community of Argentina.

This community is organized by phases of life :

There are homes for families with small members, that is children, others are located in spaces for young people, for older adults and the last for volunteers.

This community gives a central place to the spiritual sphere, so karma reading, channeling and meditation are common practices.

In this community there are schools for children whose educational program is developed by its members and its main issue is learning to live with nature, develop art and play.

Amatreya allows those people who feel the call to live according to the rhythm of nature or perhaps know their community and their way of life, can go and stay to study and work for a period not less than three months.

Amatreya Vision

The vision and mission is delimited by the constant construction of a community so that it becomes a City of Light, where anyone who feels it, can live in a natural environment and in harmony with everything that is, with everything that is it surrounds it, both in relation to the people who make it up and to each and every one of the elements of nature. Amatreya has a sister community in Mexico.

Pachacuti

Pachacuti is a self-sustainable community, very little known and widespread, since that is not its main objective. It is located on the Champaquí hill located west of the province of Córdoba . This hill is the highest peak in that province, whose average height is 2884 meters above sea level.

In the Aymara language Pacha means Earth, World and Cuti refers to re-lathe .

Víctor Hugo Sepúlveda defines Pachacuti as a word that “represents a profound change in the human being. A kind of rebirth of people that occurs from a climate phenomenon or a great social movement that results in a total transformation of consciousness, and therefore affects the entire established society .

This place which I met, is one of the most beautiful experiences I have lived. To reach this community, you have to climb a large part of the hill on foot since the cars do not arrive (Thank God). Made up of many young people whose spirit grew tired of society that is increasingly consumerist, authoritarian, rigid and aggressive with everything it touches, sweeping away who gets in their way. Young people who felt that the best solution was to shed all this and resort to this life in harmony with nature .

If you feel the call, this community has its doors open for those who feel that their life has totally different objectives than those of today's traditional society.
