Many people refer to the soul and spirit as the same thing, but they are not. Possibly the confusion is that both terms refer to an immaterial part of the human being.

The human being is made up of three parts that are: the spirit, the soul and the body. Man is a spirit that has a soul and lives in a body.

To clarify the difference between soul and spirit, we will begin by defining each of these concepts and their essence.

What is the soul?

The word soul means life, not only refers to human life, it refers to the life of each and every one of the things on earth.

The soul represents the non-visible or tangible part of every living being, while the body is the physical or material part. The ethereal part of living beings is what we know as soul, the body is the mortal or perishable part.

On the other hand, the soul encompasses the feelings, knowledge, learning, thoughts, will, desires, emotions and intuition of a person. Everything that a human being experiences, composes his soul. Thus, as the person grows his soul is consolidated, it can be consolidated as a pious soul or on the contrary as a soul or insensitive or cruel. That is, the soul defines the personality of the individual .

Unlike the body, the soul does not die. The soul goes to a higher level and depending on the behavior of the person during his life, he may suffer or not.

What is the spirit?

The spirit is the source of life of the body, it is what gives it energy so that it can move and function. It is the beginning of life for every human being and works as a connection between the soul and the body.

When a person dies, his spirit leaves the body and ceases to exist. However, there are many beliefs that the spirit can survive the death of the human being and manifest in many ways.

Also called as spirits, fairies, angels, goblins, demons, among others.

For the Christian religion, the spirit is the connection or way of communication between a person and God . It is said, that a non-believer is a dead spirit and a believing person is a living spirit.

Relationship between soul and spirit

The spirit being the source of life of every living being, is also the source of power for the soul. The soul begins to exist, thanks to the insufflation of energy it receives from the spirit.

From another point of view, we can say that the soul is the projection of man on earth, it is his relationship with the world. The spirit, on the other hand, is the human being's relationship with God . Both function as connectors of man with his two existential planes, the earthly and the divine or spiritual.

On the other hand, the soul can take more tendency towards the body, which represents the material or mundane. Or it can lean more towards the spirit, to become a spiritual soul.

Both, both the soul and the spirit, together with the body, are part of a tripartite whole, which is the human being. So the main goal of a person should be to establish a strong bond of friendship and harmony between soul, spirit and body, to achieve a full and blissful life.

Differences between soul and spirit

  • The spirit dies along with the body, the soul is immortal.
