To meditate with your children. Four simple techniques to teach them how to quiet the mind

  • 2015

"Meditation is a way of approaching your children and their concerns."

Happiness is a natural state in children as long as their needs are well met. Among these needs are the best known as shelter, food and love. In addition there is a need that is sometimes neglected and is tranquility, peace of mind.

Tranquility or relaxation are spaces of mental rest, often induced by nature. Relaxation is experienced on those Sundays that we stay at home, without hurry or compromise. Those spaces are meditative, or where the mind is still. They are of great importance because the vast majority of human development theories consider the use of meditation, or mental rest as a cornerstone in the holistic health of the child. For example, your endocrine (hormonal) system gets its balance through meditative moments.

On the other hand, the child's psychological development leads to a large dose of self-esteem when he feels calm and at peace with himself, and thus better manages his attention, his energy and his intrinsic motivation. Another great benefit of meditation is its ability to prevent diseases that greatly affect the children and youth population, such as diabetes or overweight. Recently Dr. Dean Ornish shared a study, over three decades ago, where he found that yoga and Meditation, combined with changes in habits, can prevent and even reverse the effects of chronic diseases. It is for these and other reasons that children have a great need to experiment and know how to use meditative techniques for their development.

Simple techniques to meditate with children: 1. Contemplation:

Losing our eyes in the vast ocean, enjoying a beautiful sunset, lying on the grass to look at a beautiful tree, we experience spaces of contemplation. In this meditative state our body secretes seratonin and our parasympathetic nervous system produces a reduction in our stress reactions.

It is as if we remove the accelerator from the car and thus enjoy that reduction in the mental speed of our brain until we reach stillness and stop.

2. Conscious breathing:

Looking closely at our inhalation and exhalation for a few minutes also allows us to quiet our thoughts and worries. The mere fact of taking deep breaths improves our oxygen input and the release of carbon dioxide from our lungs.

3. Conscious observation:

Children are curious by nature, therefore they can be invited to carefully observe an object. For example a leaf, observe its colors, its structure, its contours, its differences and similarities to other leaves. This process of attention to detail captures them and allows them to return to the magic of the present moment.

4. The art:

Mandala painting offers them to capture the primordial wisdom of meditative states through colors. This exercise is both good for adults and children and allows our mind to be illuminated in inner peace. All these suggestions can be used to care for and safeguard the emotional, intellectual and physical health of children and children. you come
